Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. The first major scholarly anthology of primary texts written by Luddites or their sympathizers between roughly 1811 and 1816. The Luddites were skilled textile workers (primarily framework knitters, croppers, and others in the cloth trades) in early nineteenth-century Britain who opposed the introduction of labor-saving machinery that they blamed for unemployment, wage reductions, declining product quality, poverty, and the erosion of traditional trade regulations and customs. Named after the probably mythical Ned Ludd, they are best known for machine-breaking, but they also produced a substantial body of writing.Binfield?s approach emphasizes letting the Luddites speak in their own words rather than filtering them solely through later interpretations (e.g., as simple technophobes or pure class warriors). The collection highlights how Luddite writing drew on local customs, legal and constitutional appeals, economic moral claims, and political radicalism, while varying by region and trade.A meticulously edited primary-source anthology that recovers the literary and rhetorical dimension of the Luddite movement, providing both the documents and substantial scholarly framing for historians, literary scholars, and students of labor, technology, and protest.ABOUT THIS COPY: This first edition hardcover is bound in light gray cloth.
