Adrian Durham Stokes (1902-1972) was a British art critic with a speciality in early Renaissance sculpture and the aesthetics of stone-carving. Two of his major books of the 1930s were The Quattro Cento and Stones of Rimini. In the first he characterized the Early Renaissance feeling for material and space as 'mass-effect' and 'stone-blossom'. The stone is, he said, 'carved to flower' thereby bringing to the surface the fantasies the artist reads in its depths. In Stones of Rimini he tightens and focuses these organicist themes, further analyzes the artistic process, and establishes thereby one of his most central themes: the duality of 'carving-modelling'. A fine 'carver' allows the form to come to life through the medium of the stone; the 'modeller' - on the other hand - sees the medium as so much stuff on which to impose a preconceived idea. The book is bound in the original greyish cloth coloured boards with black titling and a small red and black design on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some light foxing to the endpapers. A name, place and date has been neatly written on the front free endpaper and an obituary from The Times has been taped onto the rear fixed endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has been designed by Ben Nicholson and shows some shelf wear and light soiling. The spine ends are bumped with small pieces missing and there are small tears at the top of the spine and bottom front edge and a larger tear of about 3/4" om the top rear edge. A previous owner reinforced the top edge, bottom front edge and bottom rear corner with strips of tape on the reverse of the wrapper. The old tape is no longer present and there are newer repairs on the reverse using document repair tape to the tears. Ben Nicholson (design) (illustratore).…

Faber & Faber. 264pp, 21 x 15 cm, many b&w plates, Lithographic dustjacket by Ben Nicholson, lightly worn with a number of creases and tears, more significant tear at head of rear panel, small losses at spine edge and at base of front panel, flaps clipped at either end as designed, spotting visible inside; Dust Jacket very brittle and MUST be very carefully handled, presumably the reason scarcity of jacketed books. Greyish cloth boards lightly rubbed at edges, with some minute staining on each board, black lettering intact; Top gilt edge tarnished in places but bright for majority, bottom and fore-edges age-toned, spotting throughout prelims and index, including on end papers. Otherwise clean with no ownership marks, binding tight. Overall a sturdy First Edition copy which is very scarce in this jacket. Nicholson was commissioned by his friend, the artist, Adrian Stokes, to design the dust jacket. Nicholson had created in December 1933 the first of his abstract geometrical low relief paintings for which he later became famed as one of Britain s leading twentieth-century artists.
