Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. In this elegant and impassioned synthesis from one of the world's leading experts on Africa and poverty, economist Paul Collier writes persuasively that although nearly five billion of the world's people are beginning to climb from desperate poverty and to benefit from globalization's reach to developing countries, there is a "bottom billion" of the world's poor whose countries, largely immune to the forces of global economy, are falling farther behind and are in danger of falling apart, separating permanently and tragically from the rest of the world. Collier identifies and explains the four traps that prevent the homelands of the world's billion poorest people from growing and receiving the benefits of globalization - civil war, the discovery and export of natural resources in otherwise unstable economies, being landlocked and therefore unable to participate in the global economy without great cost, and finally, ineffective governance. As he demonstrates that these billion people are quite likely in danger of being irretrievably left behind, Collier argues that we cannot take a "headless heart" approach to these seemingly intractable problems; rather, that we must harness our despair and our moral outrage at these inequities to a reasoned and thorough understanding of the complex and interconnected problems that the world's poorest people face. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloSprache: Deutsch Broschur 4;; 449 Seiten + 61 Seiten Anhang; Bibliotheksstempel auf Rückseite Haupttitel, sonst wohlerhaltenes Buch; Tabellen; - The African Development Report 1995 is the seventh in an annual series, covering recent economic developments in Africa; an in-depth analysis of a major development policy issue of critical importance to Africa; and updated statistical information on the African economies. Part I of the Report contains four chapters and is devoted to a survey of the global economy in 1994; the performance of African economies; the major domestic policy developments during 1994; and the medium-term outlook and prospects for the African economies. Chapter 1 reviews the most recent trends of the global economy, the dominant features of which in 1994 were the relatively high output growth rates achieved by most of the industrialized and a few developing countries; the surge in the volume of world trade; and the success recorded in controlling inflationary pressures. The second chapter highlights the performance of African economies in 1994, with special emphasis on the analyses of output growth, regional patterns of growth, sectoral performance, inflation, the balance of payments, external debt, and employment; and reviews the major macroeconomic developments in the region. It also presents a survey of internal conflicts and their costs to African development; and economic profiles of a few selected countries -- Botswana, Cameroon, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia. In Chapter 3, a comprehensive analysis of the major domestic policy developments in 1994 is presented. It examines fiscal policy developments, public sector reforms and privatization; monetary and financial policy developments; and exchange rate and trade policy developments. It also examines the question of Central Bank autonomy from the Treasury in Uganda; and recent measures adopted by Kenya in pursuit of greater convertibility of its currency. Chapter 4 provides an overview of the medium-term outlook for Africa, taking in.
