Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Gilbert Sorrentino was an acclaimed American novelist, poet, literary critic and professor of literature, born in Brooklyn. He was a leading proponent of metafiction, and this book, "Splendide - Hotel" is a fitting example. Is it fiction? Is it poetry? Is it exposition? Is it belles-lettres? We find Sorrentino was inspired by not only by Rimbaud, but by William Carlos Williams - and the whole accumulation of Sorrention's experience in the social milieu of American life. Sorrentino had a keen ear for the intricacies and vagaries of American English and the patterns of speech such vagaries produced. It is a brilliant book - deeper than its thin presence would suggest. This is likely why Robert Creeley, no figure of obscurity, himself, decided to write an Afterword to the book. This is the first Printing of the Dalkey Archive Press edition, issued in 1984 (reprinting the earlier 1973 work), and, is in fact, the First Edition Thus, for its inclusion of Creeley's Afterword. Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. Originally published by New Directions, 1973. Dalkey Archive Press reprint in 1984; 64pp. includes an Afterword by Robert Creeley. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in Fine condition. "Arthur Rimbaud's invented 'Splendide-Hotel,' "built in the chaos of ice and of the polar night," provides the occasion for Sorrentino's imaginative meditation on letters and language. Each chapter serves as an opportunity for the author to expand on thoughts and images suggested by a letter of the alphabet, as well as to reflect upon the workings of the imagination, particularly in the art of William Carlos Williams and Arthur Rimbaud. Reminiscent of the philosophical treatise/poem "On Being Blue" by William H. Gass, SPLENDIDE-HOTEL is a Grand Hotel of the mind, splendidly conceived." [publisher copy] Alphabetricks abound among Sorrentino's many mini meditations and/or playful/critical prose poems. Pristine & unread, Fine chapbook-sized paperback w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine, in handsome cream wrappers w/some slight discolorations on back o/w unmarked. Quite presentably special.
