Geführt wurde die Gruppe vom legendären Jakob Leuthold. Das Frontispiz zeigt in der mittleren der drei Darstellungen das Aufstellen einer "Fahne" auf dem Gipfel, was… Desor auf S. 88 so beschreibt: "Es wurde also beschlossen, Agassiz's Bergstock, den längsten von allen, aufzupflanzen, und ich war bereit, mein Schnupftuch zu opfern und es als Fähnlein an den Stock zu befestigen. Einer der Führer aber fand das seidene Tuch doch zu schön . und bat um die Erlaubniß, sein Schnupftuch dagegen vertauschen zu dürfen. So stoppelten wir denn aus einem tannenen Alpenstock und einem rothen Lumpen eine Art Fahne zusammen, welche Jakob auf dem Gipfel aufpflanzte". - Frontispiz rückseitig mit handschriftl. Vermerk "Geschenk vom Verfasser 1844" mit rasierter Unterschrift, dadurch die obere Darstellung auf dem Titelbilds (Ansicht der Jungfrau) mit kl. Fehlstellen; die beiden übrigen sind nicht beeinträchtigt. - Faltkarte mit Knitterspuren u. mit minimalen Läsuren in den Faltstellen, die Legende des Frontispiz unten angeschnitten (Textverlust), durchgängig etwas gebräun, zu Beginn u. schluss stockfleckig.
