The author argues that Goethe's conception of Faust as a white magician, a gà ttlicher Magus who is able to control spirits without sacrificing his divine core, originated not in his later encounters with thinkers such as Herder or Swedenborg, but in his earlier readings of the work of the Renaissance physician and alchemist Paracelsus. The author demonstrates how Paracelsus's writings contain many of the themes that would later appear in Goethe's masterpiece, including the idea of three worlds, three souls, and three elementary substances, as well as the notion that true magic is not theurgy but rather a gift from God. Ultimately, this book offers a new perspective on the genesis of one of the most important works of German literature, arguing that Goethe's Faust is not a product of Enlightenment rationalism or Romantic mysticism, but rather a deeply Christian work that draws heavily on the Hermetic and kabbalistic traditions of the Renaissance.
