Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. THE CEREMONIALISM OF THE TEPECAN (Eastern New Mexico University Contributions in Anthropology, Vol. 4, No. 1, October 1972), softcover, illustrated, 3-staple binding. ITEM CONDITION: good. The text block and illustrations are in near fine condition with no tears, dog-ears, or marks, but five pages have small spots with no effect on the text. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is not a library magazine nor a remainder. The wraps are in near fine condition, but for two small stains on the back cover. 10 x 7 ¼, 57 pages, 10 ounces. XX [From the text] The Tepecanos of Mexico who now inhabit the village of Asqueltan within the Sierra Madre Occidental, Jalisco, Mexico, no longer practice to any extent the religion of their ancestors. Not much is remembered. For information regarding their earlier ceremonial activities, therefore, investigators are pressed to accept the documents of earlier scientists. These are few in number and include those of early Spanish Jesuit Missionaries and the observations of Ales Hrdlicka and J. Alden Mason in the beginning of this century. Even at this time, it could not be said that the old religion of the Tepecan was flourishing. Today, any additional information regarding the ancient religion could only be obtained from archaeological excavation of several cave-shrines in the hills about the village. The natives at present indicate no knowledge of pre-Christian religion, and this is reflected in our own and several other studies done on the Tepecan since 1920. The basic data presented herewith were gathered by Mason during five months of residency at the village of Asqueltan in northern Jalisco during the winters of 1911-12 and 1912-13. At this time he was a Fellow from the University of Pennsylvania to the International School of Mexican Anthropology. Shortly thereafter, several reports were published on the ethnography, language, and folklore of the region. A large series of prayers in text was also published, but for over fifty years he was unable to find the time to present the ceremonial aspects of the religion. This section is published posthumously through the cooperation of the junior author of this manuscript. The Tepecan (former spelling Tepecano) are a fairly isolated group of people belonging to the Southern Tepehuan group of Durango. They differ from the latter only slightly in language and culture. Few northern Mexican groups have been more neglected in the literature. Carl Lumholtz met a few members of this tribe and devoted a few pages to them in UNKNOWN MEXICO (1902). Hrdlicka spent a short time with them and published his observations (1903). Even in Hrdlicka' s time, acculturation to the peon pattern had gone far. Ten years later, Mason rarely heard the language spoken.…
