Der 60.000 m große Messekomplex repräsentierte damals den Stolz der belgischen Industrie auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer wirtschaftlichen Blütezeit. Doch nur zwei Jahrzehnte später geriet die westeuropäische Stahl- und Kohleindustrie in eine Strukturkrise, von der sie sich nie mehr erholen sollte. Dadurch sank auch die Nachfrage an großen Messen Schritt für Schritt, bis sich der riesige Gebäudekomplex irgendwann nicht mehr wirtschaftlich betreiben ließ.2015 veranstaltete die Stadt Charleroi einen Architekturwettbewerb zur inhaltlichen und baulichen Neukonzeption des Gebäudes, den das Team von AgwA und architecten jan de vylder inge vinck gewann. Um die Nutzfläche des dreiteiligen Komplexes zu verkleinern, ohne ganze Gebäudeteile davon irreversibel abzureißen, verwandelten sie etwa ein Fünftel des gesamten Gebäudevolumens von einem Innen- zu einem Außenraum. Dafür entfernten sie lediglich die Fassaden des zentralen Erschließungsgebäudes, das die beiden dreistöckigen Ausstellungsgebäude verbindet, erhielten jedoch alle seine Geschossdecken, Treppen und das Dach. Auf diese Weise ist in der Mitte des Gebäudes ein großzügiges urbanes Foyer entstanden, durch das der öffentliche Raum der Stadt sich nun quer durch das ehemals ge- schlossene Gebäude zieht. This book therefore, endeavored to substantiate the source of the reported phosphates in Rivers Nzoia, Yala, Kisat and Nyalenda waste water treatment plants in Kenya. This was achieved by assessing phosphate levels in water, sediments and air above the rivers both upstream and downstream. Sediment and water samples were collected using a grab sampler while air samples were collected using the atmospheric deposition sampling method. Sampling was done during the long wet and dry seasons. Water and atmospheric air samples were analyzed using UV-Visible spectrophotometer for total phosphates as sediments being analyzed for bio-available and exchangeable phosphates.
