Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a dual collection of ancient sentences or proverbs attributed to Ahikar, an Assyrian vizier from the 7th century BCE. The first set of maxims was intended to educate his adopted nephew Nadan, while the second was born from Ahikar's need to teach Nadan a lesson after he betrayed him. These two sets of maxims were already known to the Greek philosopher Democritus in the 5th century BCE and may have served as a model for some of his ideas and those of the philosopher Menander. Later, they were incorporated into the Old Testament book of Tobit and into other ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean literatures, making them a significant part of the shared cultural heritage of these regions. The book also includes an analysis of the literary and historical context of the Ahikar story, examining its relationship to the book of Tobit, Greek literature, and the development of fables attributed to Aesop. Through a close examination of the text and its historical context, the author sheds light on the ethical, religious, and social values of the ancient Near East and their enduring influence on Western literature.
