The story is told in rhyme and the book is designed with pockets within the pages, as though they are envelopes. Each pocket contains an item of post. No inscriptions. 'The Jolly Postman and Other People's Letters' comes with a separate postcard 'Everybody Loves a Letter'. 'The Jolly Pocket Postman' is accompanied by an additional piece of ephemera, an unopened envelope from "The Jolly Post Office" with the printed note: "Dear Reader, Some copies of The Jolly Pocket Postman may contain one or two imperfect inserts. So, just in case, here are a couple of spares. Happy Reading! Also included is a Publisher's Colour Flyer for 'The Jolly Pocket Postman' (for the upcoming publication on September 11, 1995) with details of the publicity and advertising campaign. On the back of the Flyer is an unopened envelope from the publisher with an un-identified insert. NB: "The Jolly Postman" received several prestigious awards, including the Kurt Maschler Award in 1986 (for a children's book in which text and illustration are integrated so that each enhances the other and for its innovative use of letters and interactive elements). "The Jolly Postman" was awarded the Red House Children's Book Award (1987) which is determined by children's votes and celebrates books that children love to read. Although not awarded to the original "The Jolly Postman", Allan Ahlberg won the Kate Greenaway Medal for British children's book illustration for the sequel "The Jolly Christmas Postman" in 1991 furthering establishing the Ahlberg's reputation in children's literature.
