Unique and deliberately assembled collection devoted to the poetic evidence used in Arabic grammar, or shawahid, bringing together two distinct scholarly worlds: the Andalusi-Maghribi tradition represented by Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Sanhaji, known as al-Daqqun (d. 1515 CE), and the Mamluk scholar Mahmud ibn Ahmad ibn Musa ibn Ahmad al-Ayni (d. 1451 CE). The most significant feature of the manuscript is the placement of al-Daqqun's "Bidayat al-tarif" before the two works associated with al-Ayni, forming a carefully ordered sequence centred on the poetic quotations used by Arabic grammarians as authoritative evidence for questions of syntax, morphology, vocabulary, and correct linguistic usage. - The first work, occupying ff. 1-25, is "Bidayat al-tarif bi-shawahid sidi al-Sharif" by the Andalusi jurist and grammarian al-Daqqun, a muhaddith and preacher at the Qarawiyyin Mosque. He belonged to the generation of Andalusi scholars whose migration helped carry the intellectual traditions of Granada into the scholarly institutions of Morocco. - Leaves 26-30 contain "Sharh khutbat kitab Faraid al-qalaid fi mukhtasar al-shawahid", a concise commentary on the introductory preface to "Faraid al-qalaid". This is followed on ff. 31-211 by "Faraid al-qalaid fi mukhtasar al-shawahid", associated with Badr al-Din al-Ayni, the eminent Hanafi jurist, historian, hadith scholar, and grammarian. Al-Ayni enjoyed exceptional standing at the Mamluk court: he served as an envoy for Sultan al-Muayyad Shaykh and later as Hanafi chief judge under Sultan Barsbay, who consulted him on legal and scholarly matters; he also read historical works before the Sultan and explained them in Turkish. - Copied in 958 H, the manuscript was produced some thirty-six years after al-Daqqun's death and almost exactly a century after that of al-Ayni. It thus brings into direct succession two figures separated by geography and generation but united by a common philological method: al-Ayni represents the highly developed scholarly culture of fifteenth-century Mamluk Cairo, while al-Daqqun embodies the transmission and adaptation of grammatical learning from Granada into Morocco. The conjunction of their works in a single Maghribi volume is particularly revealing, demonstrating not merely the teaching of grammar through poetic evidence, but the movement of texts, methods, and scholarly authority between the eastern and western Islamic worlds. - Binding and paper professionally restored with some dampstaining and worming throughout. A treatise on calculating time with the aid of the sine quadrant, for any region (GAL II, p. 218, 1, attributed by Brockelmann to Sibt al-Maridini's grandfather, the astronomer Abdallah ibn Khalil ibn Yusuf Jamaladdin al-Maridini al-Qahiri, d. 1406). - 2. "Raqa'iq al-haqa'iq fi hisab al-daraj wa'l daq'iq" ("Subtleties of Truths on Arithmetic of Degrees and Minutes"). Instructions for the calculation of celestial motions with the aid of minute proportions (GAL II, p. 217, 11). A commentary on a work by his teacher, the Egyptian mathematician and astronomer Shihab al-din Abu'l-'Abbas Ahmad ibn Rajab ibn Tibugha 'Ibn al-Majdi' (1365-1447), entitled "Kashf al-haqa'iq fi hisab al-daraj wa'l-daq'iq" ("Opening Truths on Arithmetic of Degrees and Minutes"). - 3. A commentary, "Risalah [al-Fathiyya (al-Shihabiyya)] fi'l-'amal al-jaybiyya" ("Treatise on [Fath al-Din (Shihab al-Din)]". Operations with the sine quadrant (GAL II, p. 216f., 7). - Sibt (Ibn Bint) al-Maridini (the Elder, 1423-1506) lived in Cairo and Damascus. He served as the muwaqqit (time-keeper) of the al-Azhar mosque in Cairo and was a pupil of Ibn al-Majdi. His works are often conflated with those of his grandfather, and with those of his like-named son, who died in 1527 (GAL II, p. 468). - A few old repairs occasionally affecting letters; altogether very well preserved.
