This was not unusual at a time when a fifth of the British mercantile marines workforce was recruited from the subcontinent. The book combines the extensive press coverage and judicial records of this accident with a plethora of archival, literary, technical, and linguistic sources to reveal the pervasiveness of a genteel racism in the board rooms of British shipping imperialism. It explains the business logic driving the pervasive use of irrational racist ideology for structuring the maritime labour market and for implementing racialized modalities of labour management on the worlds most glamorous steamship liners. It also discusses the scope for agency of maritime workers under a racialized labour regime in an age of imperialismissues that are no less relevant in our own time of postcolonial capitalism. Phrases like Public works or infrastructure are rarely subjected to historical reflection. Colonial nationalist and postcolonial operators have presented their transport policies as if they were informed by the needs of a general public and not shaped according to preferences of particularistic forces. Pathways of Empire moves beyond the technocratic progressivism of earlier writings on the history of transport. For the first time theories of produced social space are concretized in order to open a new perspective on India's social history of circulation and infrastructure. Moreover the prevalent and narrow focus on railways is overcome. The effects of the steam revolution are thus located in the wider context of existent South Asian regimes of circulation. Part I of this book develops a conceptual framework of social space that is applied in Part II to the specific historical contexts of the British ruled districts and princely states of Orissa in the long nineteenth century. It reconstructs the slow transformation of an ancien regime of circulation that largely survived the colonial annexation of coastal Orissa by half century into a new regime of circulation that was well tuned into the exigencies of colonial capitalism by World War I. Drawing upon extensive and unexplored archival materials Ravi Ahuja discusses a wide range of issues including caravan and river trade rural resistance against roads and canals the effects of the 1866 famine pilgrimage and migration the commercialization of princely states and the modernization of forced labour. 362 pp.

In contemporary India work for wages expands substantially as a mode of subsistence, while 'labour' at the same time, suffers a dramatic depreciation as a political force and as a target of state policy. This is a reversal of an earlier, little understood process that originated in the late colonial period but fully unfolded only in the years of Nehruvian rule. The six essays of this volume reconstruct this now marginalized political history of an 'age of labour' from various angles using previously inaccessible police records, rare autobiographical documents and other neglected material. They examine how political conflict, militancy and trade union activism were rooted in the everyday lives of construction workers and artisans, of 'untouchable' tanners and sweepers, of seafarers, railway staff and factory labourers, throughout the late colonial period. They analyse how transformed politics of caste intersected with the late colonial upsurge of labour politics. They reassess the complex relationships of nationalist mobilizations and labour movements, of elite politicians and an emergent group of 'organic' worker-intellectuals and proletarian militants. They provide meticulous reconstructions of how incidents of labour protest unfolded in India's varied industrial spaces. They argue, in sum, for a reappraisal of Indian labour history as an eventful political history. The volume is rounded off by the political memoirs of Bashir Ahmed Bakhtiar tracing his metamorphosis from militant worker to trade union leader. The memoirs, originally published in Urdu, are made available in English translation for the first time and provided with a detailed introduction. Ravi Ahuja is Professor of Modern Indian History at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies, University of Göttingen, Germany. He works on various problems of social history including labour, urbanism infrastructure and war.
