Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. From the ancient Etruscans and Romans, to the Renaissance masters of Michelangelo and Raphael, the Vatican Museums represent an aspect of the history of humanity through art. The Indigenous Australian collection is a little known and unexplored part of that story. Being amongst some of the earliest known documentations of Australian Indigenous cultures, the collection includes the earliest extant set of Pukumani poles from Melville and Bathurst Islands, alongside more recent contributions of artworks and cultural objects, and presents materials that have not been exhibited before in Australia. The responsibility to culturally reconnect relevant contemporary Indigenous communities to their material heritage held in the museum has been realised and is documented in this catalogue, which includes a catalogue of objects and essays by Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors. During the process of community visits and consultations, images of the objects brought old and young people together, instigating intergenerational dialogue about the past. Now, in collaboration with communities, the Indigenous collection can be seen in this catalogue and is represented at the heart of the Vatican Museums where the objects have become cultural ambassadors inviting others to come and learn more about Australian Indigenous cultures. From the ancient Etruscans and Romans, to the Renaissance masters of Michelangelo and Raphael, the Vatican Museums represent an aspect of the history of humanity through art. This book is the result of ten years of research and collaboration between the Vatican Museums and the local communities of the Pacific area, carried on according to the philosophy of reconnection of the objects with the places they come from. The text, showing a remarkable photographic apparatus of more than 300 images, begins with a section analysing the history of the collections and their development over the centuries. Following, the catalogue of every object, divided in six different geographic areas: Micronesia, Polynesia, Melanesia, New Guinea, Island Southeast Asia, and Australia. What emerges is a wide and interesting variety of artifacts, created by the cultures living in these areas. These are the very same artifacts, which the Pope s Museums host and preserve, in order to pass them down, intact, for the future generations.

'An important catalogue, available in Italian and in English, which introduces the Ethnological collections conserved in the Vatican Museums, presenting to a wide public, for the first time, works of every age, from prehistory to the contemporary age, and from every part of the world. The catalogue, in addition to providing a comprehensive overview of the extraordinary heterogeneity of the ethnology collection, proposes to introduce the cultural richness of the extra-European civilizations, promoting the diversity as a new perspective of knowledge. The first part is dedicated to indigenous collections, and each section exposes the most representative artifacts of every continent; the second part focuses on oriental collections, even these divided into sections indicating the area of origin. Both indigenous and oriental collections include a special section reserved for Christian art. Among the works, there are devotional objects, statues, prehistoric stones, masks and musical instruments, as well as the prestigious painted rocks of the Wandjina Song Cycle and Chinese painted paper scrolls. The vast iconographic apparatus is quite suggestive, combining archive photographs and numerous colour images, evocative of habits and customs of different peoples and cultures, and celebratory also of the variety and beauty of the artifacts, true witnesses of "other" worlds, still little known.'.

Third catalogue in the series examining the ethnological collections of the Vatican Museums, available in Italian and English, dedicated to the Australian indigenous collection and published in collaboration with the Aboriginal Studies Press. Starting from the historical events that since 1847 have witnessed the formation of this collection now composed of around 300 objects the book explores numerous aspects of the culture of Australia, thanks to the valuable contributions of scholars of diverse cultural extraction. The book was produced in close contact with Aboriginal communities, following the philosophy of reconnection that characterises both the recent history of Australia and the section of the Vatican Museums that holds the ethnological collections: from conception to final draft, it was approved by the Custodians and Elders of the Communities. Careful preliminary research enabled the reconstruction of the history of the objects, now held in the Vatican, and the location of the country and descendants of those who made them, culturally reconnecting contemporaries with the material legacy pertaining to them: the results of research and visits to the communities are well documented here. The volume concludes with a catalogue of objects, offering a vast selection from the collection held in the Vatican. It is richly illustrated with archive images, full page photographs and details of the works.
