Curieux ouvrage composé par un sous-chef retraité du Bureau des Cultes et des Beaux Arts de la Préfecture de la Seine. Son intention est de démontrer par l'exemple que l'amour de l'or encouragé par les gouvernements est cause de tous les maux et de suggérer aux chefs d'Etat de valoriser une conduite vertueuse et désintéressée pour accéder au bonheur universel.

Paris : chez l'auteur, G. E. Dentu, et Berlandier, 1841-1849. Deux ouvrages reliés en un volume in-8, 208 et 15 pages. Demi-toile prune postérieure, dos lisse, titre doré. Dos insolé, gardes roussies. Dans le premier ouvrage, rousseurs, plus marquées au début ; déchirure transversale sans manque à 8 feuillets (pp. 69-84). L'édition originale des Quatre Vérités parut en 1835 ; toutes sont rares. Le second opuscule est en édition originale. Le premier ouvrage est destiné à fonder sur terre l'empire de la vertu, qui doit être à la base de tous gouvernements, et à en chasser le crime. Il est divisé en quatre parties : le ciel, la terre, le crime, la vertu. Dans la troisième partie, on peut lire de sordides histoires, comme celle de cette jeune fille violée par neuf assassins et qui donnera neuf mois plus tard naissance à un enfant qui deviendra un assassin, ou celle de cette jeune fille et de sa nourrice qui, s'égarant dans la forêt, tombent dans une carrière et se tuent, et dont la conclusion est une demande de création de panneaux indicateurs dans tout pays civilisé ! Le second livre est un projet de création d'une caisse de retraite nationale financée par tous les Français à raison de un franc par mois. Chaque livre s'ouvre sur une épître (aux rois et aux personnes âgées) signée manuscritement par l'auteur. Joseph-Aimable Grégoire fut sous-chef au Bureau des cultes et beaux-arts du département de la Seine. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages de styles divers : études historiques sérieuses comme le Relevé général des objets d'art commandés depuis 1816 jusqu'en 1830 par l'administration de la ville de Paris (1833) et la Notice explicative des objets d'art qui décorent la nouvelle église Notre-Dame-de-Lorette à Paris (1837), manuels tels que le Guide du négociant, de l'artiste et de l'étranger dans le Palais de la Bourse (1833) et l'Itinéraire de l'artiste et de l'étranger dans les églises de Paris (1833), ou encore élucubrations philosophico-politiques dont le premier livre de ce recueil est un bon exemple.
