Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In the mid-nineteenth century, the counties of Young, Jack, Palo Pinto, and Parker lay along one of the most volatile stretches of the Western Frontier. From the 1850s through the mid-1870s, this region witnessed sustained conflict as settlement pressed westward across the plains of North T…exas.Drawn from J.W. Wilbarger's monumental Indian Depredations in Texas, this volume gathers selected narratives centered on these pivotal counties. Among the events treated are the Elm Creek Raid, the Warren Wagon Train Massacre, and the subsequent Indian trials that marked a turning point in American legal and frontier history. These accounts-collected from firsthand testimony and preserved through decades of local memory-offer an unvarnished window into the realities of frontier life. This edition presents carefully selected stories from Wilbarger's original work, preserving the voice and substance of one of Texas's earliest chroniclers of frontier violence while focusing attention on the counties most deeply affected by nineteenth-century raids and reprisals. From the grasslands where raiding parties moved under cover of night to the courtrooms where unprecedented trials unfolded, these narratives trace the arc of a frontier in transformation. Together, they document a region that stood at the crossroads of settlement, resistance, tragedy, and change.J.W. Wilbarger devoted decades to collecting testimony and documentary evidence concerning Indian depredations across the Texas frontier. His work remains centered on the counties most deeply affected by nineteenth-century raids and reprisals.Jake Akins has conducted extensive research into the history of the Western Frontier in North Texas, with particular emphasis on Young, Jack, Palo Pinto, and Parker Counties. This edition presents selected narratives from Wilbarger's original work, maintaining its historical integrity while offering a focused regional lens. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Thomas Reid (1710-1796), a key figure of the Scottish Enlightenment and colleague of David Hume and Adam Smith, succeeded Smith as the University of Glasgow's Chair of Moral Philosophy in 1764. Renowned for his work on epistemology, Reid championed common sense as the foundation of human kn…owledge. He also significantly contributed to natural theology, which examines what light nature can shed on God's existence and attributes. Reid regularly delivered lectures at Glasgow on this subject, with student notes from 1780 surviving. These lectures, published here, offer insights into the historical interplay of natural science, philosophy, and theology, illuminating today's debate over intelligent design. Excluded from the ten-volume Edinburgh Edition of Reid's works, this revised, thoroughly annotated edition of Reid's lectures corrects errors in prior transcriptions, underscoring their historical importance as well as their relevance to ongoing debates over teleology in nature. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Thomas Reid (1710-1796) was one of the principal philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment. A colleague and friend of David Hume and Adam Smith, in 1764 Reid succeeded Smith to the University of Glasgow's Chair of Moral Philosophy. He is most famous for his work in epistemology, defending… common sense (the exercise of our ordinary, inborn cognitive faculties) as the ultimate foundation of human knowledge.Reid was also an important contributor to the eighteenth-century debate on natural theology, that is, the inference from the evidence of purpose in nature to the existence and attributes of God. Although he never published a separate book on this subject, Reid did give regular lectures on natural theology at the University of Glasgow, of which several sets of student notes have survived. The notes edited, annotated, and published in this volume were from a student of Reid's who attended his natural theology lectures in the spring of 1780. These lectures have important implications for the history of discussions on the relation between natural science and theology, culminating in the modern Intelligent Design debate. The Lectures on Natural Theology were not included in the ten-volume Edinburgh Edition of Reid's collected works. Moreover, while two earlier editions of these lectures exist, both contain serious mistakes of transcription and annotation. For these reasons, this carefully revised edition of this important text fills an important gap in the literature.
