First English edition. 319pp. Émile-Auguste Chartier (1868-1951), commonly known as Alain, was a French philosopher, journalist, essayist, pacifist, and teacher of philosophy. The present work was first published in French in 1921, under the title 'Mars ou la Guerre Jugée'. It consists of a collection of essays or brief chapters on war in general and specifically The First World War. It demonstrates that the world is governed primarily by passions more than interests, and decries ambition, absolute power, fanatacism, and imperialism. It promotes the free thinking individual, culture, and humanism. Alain opposed the two great errors of 1) believing war to be inevitable and 2) believing it to be impossible, and he writes that attachment to a belief in fatalism is the real evil in the world, and while misfortune is all around us, evil is not. The free thinking mind does not have to submit. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards with a few small stains near the top corner of the front board. The spine is slightly faded and the spine ends are bumped with some wear to the cloth at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
