Paperback. Condizione: New. Since 1980, the peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand have fundamentally changed through new policies and new patterns of migration - from a largely Pakeha population with 10 per cent Maori in 1980 to today's megadiversity, with new residents from Asia, the Pacific and the rest of the world. Immigration has… had a profound impact on New Zealand's society, economy, and place in the world.Edges of Empire is an in-depth account of the social, political and economic context within which these transformations in policy and population took place. Drawing on interviews with fifteen former Ministers of Immigration, this book reveals the intricacies of politics and policy-making that have led to New Zealand's relatively open and economically driven approach towards migration.Written by three leading social scientists, Edges of Empire provides an insightful account of who is included in Aotearoa New Zealand and under what conditions.

Octavo softcover (VG+); all our specials have minimal description to keep listing them viable. They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples. Ordering more than one book may reduce your overall postage costs.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Human geopolitics, the competition for population rather than territory, is an essential but weakly understood dimension of world politics today. Such competition has preceded violent conflict throughout history, but has been muted since the Treaties of Westphalia laid the territorial found…ations of the modern international system in the mid-seventeenth century. Today, however, human geopolitics is being resurrected in unanticipated ways, as governments are enabledand encouraged to engage their emigrant diasporas. How and why is this happening? Until now these questions have been difficult to answer. The majority of research attention hasfocused on questions of immigration policy in a handful of wealthy migrant destination countries, largely ignoring the emigration policies that preoccupy the worlds many migrant origin states. This book addresses that research imbalance, by focusing on the overlooked sending side of migration policy.Drawing on data covering all UN members across the post-WWII period, and fieldwork with high-level policy makers across 60 states and a dozen international organisations, thebook charts the re-emergence of human geopolitics through the global spread of diaspora institutions government ministries and offices dedicated to emigrants and their descendants. It calls for thedevelopment of stronger guiding principles and evaluation frameworks to govern these new state-diaspora relations in an era of unprecedented global interdependence. This volume charts the rapid rise of various forms of diaspora institutions, across distinct historical phases and geographical regions, explaining the way that evolving models and best practices of international migration management have increasingly changed the way states see their diasporas and reconfigured the rules of international politics. Hardback. Condizione: New. In this noteworthy collection, the editors present the key articles published over the past twenty years which illustrate three related 'modes' of governing migration: a national mode, an international mode and a transnational mode. In recent years a new phase of migration policy-making has emerged: na…tion states, international organizations and NGOs have increasingly directed their efforts towards cooperative management of transnational flows and networks.
