Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Journalism, Journalism Professions, grade: 1,7, Keele University (Media, Communications & Culture), course: Making the News, language: English, abstract: ''We are all journalists now' is a phrase sometimes heard [.] Is this correct Is it enough to have a mobile phone camera and an internet connection to be a journalist ' (Örnebring 2013: 39)When the earthquake and the fifteen-metre hit the coast near Tokyo on 11 March 2011, it wasn't news reporters or professional journalists that were the first ones that were on the spot. The most useful footage of the horrible events was gathered by the citizens of Sendai, a city on the North East coast that had been struck by the tsunami. This footage was later used by several news agencies for their television news reports about the tsunami. Without knowing it, those people filming the tragic natural disaster had engaged in a kind of journalism that challenges traditional news gathering and media habits: citizen journalism. In the following part, I am going to give a definition of citizen journalism and explain the practises that are used. After that I am going to show how and to what extent it challenges traditional journalism.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Peoples / Nations, grade: 2,3, Keele University (Media, Communications & Culture), course: The Virtual Revolution: New Technologies, language: English, abstract: 'The 'Twitter Revolution' in Iran, the clean democratic elections in Egypt following their revolution that ousted Mubarak, the overthrow of Gaddafi in Libya, Occupy Wall Street, and even the 6 million people who took to the streets earlier this month in Syria -- all were aided by the technological advances that have decentralized the flow of information. Who would have dreamed a hashtag would transform journalism, empowering individuals to report the news in real time ' (Fox 2012)Since the globalisation of the internet, it has been widely discussed if those new technologies help advance the cause of democracy in the contemporary world. Over the past decades, the internet has evolved into more than just a place for people to meet, in many ways. There are two opposite views of the contribution of the internet to democracy. William H. Dutton, professor of Internet Studies at the University of Oxford, says that those two opposite views see the internet as 'either a technology of freedom or control.' (Dutton 2007: 4) Hereby, 'the optimistic view is that the Internet will tend to democratise access to information and undermine hierarchies' (4), whereas the negative view is that governments, institutions and companies will use the internet to extend their 'control of existing institutional structures and organizational arrangements.' (5) Dutton describes the most extreme form of that kind of control as a surveillance society, an image that strongly resembles the dystopian state of surveillance in George Orwell's 1984. In the following part I am going to trade the positive influence of the internet on democracy off against the possible negative consequences the internet could have on the process of democratisation.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,7, University of Bamberg (Department for English Literature), course: Writing India and the Indian Diaspora in the 21st Century, language: English, abstract: This essay examines Nazneen's transformation in the course of Monica Ali's Brick Lane. It analyses how Nazneen changes into an independent woman by overcoming her belief that fate determines her life and focuses on how the people around her contribute to her transformation of character.First I will select characteristics of the female Bildungsroman which are relevant for Brick Lane and Nazneen's development throughout the novel. I will pick up those characteristics in the course of the essay and apply them to Brick Lane. To understand where Nazneen's belief comes from I will take a closer look at the story of How She Was Left To Her Fate and therefore the origin of fate and the role of women in Islam. After that I will concentrate on different factors for Nazneen's transformation, how the people she interacts with contribute to her change, and take a closer look at crucial scenes from Brick Lane. Finally, I will take a look at how a transformed Nazneen stands up for herself and becomes her own person.
