First edition of this sensationalistic Klondike gold rush memoir recounting the experiences of 18 gold seekers from the YMCA setting out from New York Feb. 1, 1897. After voyaging on a condemned brigantine with a drunken captain, they purportedly attempted the Malaspina Glacier trek to the gold fields, traversing from Yakutat Bay across the Wrangell-St. Elias range, and dropping into the headwaters of the Tanana and Yukon Rivers. The absorbing tale is filled with contradictions as it relates the loss of three into ice crevasses, madness while wintering in a cabin, starving retreat across icefields, and finally rescue by a passing revenue cutter. Wilkins of the gold stikes in the Yukon (chipping, edgewear, some scuffing, closed tear neatly repaired, rebacked), still VG- copy from the library of Gary Kurutz. First Shorey Book's edition of this famed Klondike gold rush promotional magazine originally published in Dawson, N.W.T. & San Francisco, CA which was projected to be published quarterly, however Moore, and his partners Charles Meadows, & Wilkins were later sued in Nov., 1898, and appear to have been driven out of business in the Yukon. The impossibly scarce original publication issued April 1st, 1898 touted all of the major gold strikes heretofore made in the Alaska-Yukon Territories, the potential for land development, nicely illustrated with photographs, and copies were embellished with gold ink arching over mushers and gold miners. The last copy to appear at auction was in 1969 in the famed Streeter sale (3586), and the copy used to create this fine lithographed reproduction was oend by Dorothy Pattinson of Fairbanks, AK who at the time had loaned it to the Pullen Alaska Museum's Klondike Exhibit at the Seattle Center Food Circus balcony, on the grounds of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. Theodore August Metz was a German-born musician trained on violin in Hanover who emigrated to the United States and worked various trades before establishing himself as a bandleader and composer in Chicago?s late 19th-century popular music scene. He achieved national prominence with ?There?ll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight? (1896?97), a widely performed marching tune that became especially popular during the Spanish-American War and in minstrel and touring band repertories. Frontier gold rushes are an integral part of American history of the 19th century and, even today, capture the imagination of those hoping to strike it rich. A Closer Look Coverage embraces territorial Alaska as well as adjacent parts of the Yukon, with gold regions highlighted in yellow and 'Gold District' boldly written across central Alaska. An inset of the Klondike (Juneau to Forty Mile Creek) appears in the upper right, with gold discoveries highlighted. Red overprinting notes overland and river routes into the notoriously inaccessible gold region. Red overprinting illustrates the same inland routes on the larger main map of Alaska, along with the 'monthly mail route' from Seattle and the steamer route from San Francisco. Klondike Gold Rush The Klondike Gold Rush, ignited in 1896, was a frenetic migration of prospectors to the Klondike region of the Yukon in northwestern Canada following the discovery of gold by local miners. This gold rush transformed the landscape and the lives of thousands, as over 100,000 individuals, driven by the allure of wealth, embarked on a grueling journey towards the remote wilderness, facing harsh climates, treacherous terrains, and immense hardships. Despite the arduous conditions, the promise of gold attracted fortune-seekers from around the globe, leading to the near-instant development of Dawson City and leaving a lasting legacy. Gold was discovered near Nome in western Alaska in 1899, and many prospectors left to try their luck in these new goldfields. Boomtown populations dwindled, and gold production peaked in 1903. The map was published by Rand McNally & Company with the purpose of delineating the various routes (in red) to the Klondike Region from San Francisco, Seattle, Sitka, and Edmonton.The Klondike Gold Rush ran from 1896 when gold was discovered by local miners to 1899 when many prospectors had been unsuccessful and gold was discovered in Nome, which sent many further north, thus beginning the Nome Gold Rush (1899 - 1909). It took roughly one year for word to reach American cities such as San Francisco and Seattle that gold had been discovered in the Klondike and another year for one to make the journey to the Klondike. Prospectors were encouraged to take a years worth of supplies for their journey as there were no railroads in the region and most had to make the arduous journey on foot.Along the various routes sprouted numerous towns and forts that made a good deal of money resupplying prospectors and offering a warm bath, shower, and saloon. Dawson City, the town located within the Klondike Region grew in population from500 in 1896,to approximately 30,000 people by summer 1898.
