This book compiles a wealth of research from various disciplines to explore the complex relationship between human land use and dynamic social, economic, and political forces. The author examines how our ever-changing needs and advancements, from the Industrial Revolution to the present day, have driven land use changes. Through case studies, the book illustrates the resulting conflicts between different land use sectors, such as agriculture, urban development, recreational activities, and resource extraction. The author emphasizes that these conflicts stem from our collective choices and behaviors, and that understanding these choices is key to shaping future land use policies and practices. The insights provided in this book are essential for anyone seeking to navigate the complexities of land use planning and decision-making in an increasingly interconnected world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. 250 pages. Text in French. Reprint of the 1896 edition published with the subtitle Ouvage faisant suite aux enchainements du monde animal dans les temps geologiques. Illustrated in black-and-white. A volume in the History of Paleontology collection of reprints by Arno Press. A fine hardcover copy in brown cloth with gold lettering on cover and spine. No dust jacket. From the Harvard office library of the paleontologist and leading advocate for evolution, Stephen Jay Gould. With a tipped in bookplate indicating the provenance. *** Intellectually, Gould understood the true nature of these bookplates, but the book collector in him appreciated them. In his essay 'A Seahorse for All Races' Gould writes about one of his prized possessions, a book from Charles Dickens' library: 'Dickens made no annotations, but a bookplate on the cover, presumably inserted as a come-on for a sale after Dickens' death in 1870, does prove that [he] kept and shelved the book.' *** We offer our Gould bookplates, printed letterpress in two colors, in the same spirit.

Condizione: Very Good. 96 pp ; color illustrations ; photographic boards featuring scenes of Adam and Eve by Albrecht Durer ; ISSN: 0425-2357 ; LCCN: 62-3170 ; sn 97-48172 ; 13" x 10" ; The fourth and final issue of the infamous sex periodical of the 60's, shut down after this the fourth issue ; as publisher Ralph Ginzberg himself writes concerning this scandalous publication : "Upon discharge from the Army I shifted into broadcasting and magazines (NBC, Reader's Digest, Collier's, LOOK and other pillars of communic ations industry respectability), then launched my own magazine, the artistic, cerebral, innovative and highly acclaimed hard-bound quarterly EROS. Writers and other intellectuals throughout the world celebrated it. Even the U.S. State Department bou ght copies to exhibit at USIA libraries overseas as exemplars of American periodical publishing. But bluenoses here at home railed against the publication and one, the New York smut-hunting Catholic priest Morton Hill, persuaded U.S. Attorney Genera l Robert Kennedy to have me indicted, as Father Hill later boasted, for distributing 'obscene' literature through the mails, a federal crime. The indictment sought punishment of $280,000 in fines and 280 years in prison. New York's newspapers gave p rominent play to Father Hill's and the Justice Department's attacks against me. They quoted -- straight-faced -- the remarks of Congresswoman Kathryn O'Hay Granahan who declared, on the floor of the House of Representatives, that my publication of E ROS was 'part of an international Communist plot.' But newspapers ignored my every attempt to defend myself against these moronic allegations. I announced press conferences at various sites around town: at the Benjamin Franklin statue on Newspaper R ow, at my magazine's offices, on the steps of the General Post Office. All were listed in the AP and UPI daybooks but nobody showed up -- with one exception: Gay Talese, then a star reporter for The New York Times, appeared at my Post Office press c onference where I presented an impassioned rebuttal of my attackers' charges and answered his few questions. I distinctly remember that he jotted down not a single word of my remarks. The Times ran no story the next day and Talese went onto become v ice president and a director of P.E.N., the international organization dedicated to combating censorship of authors and publishers. After a brief trial in June, 1963, I was convicted in U.S. District Court, Philadelphia." ; Contents: Love in the Bib le / Rufus Mott -- The Jewel Box Revue : A Photographic Essay / Raymond Jacobs -- A Letter From Allan Ginsberg -- Was Shakespeare a Homosexual? / John Erno Russell -- I Want a Girl Just Like the Girl -- The Long After Midnight Girl : A Short, Short Story / Ray Bradbury -- The Sexual Side of Anti-Semitism / Shepherd Raymond -- My Life and Loves / Frank Harris, introduction by Warren Boroson -- New Twists on 3 Great Trysts / Dan Greenburg -- President Harding's Second Lady / John Hejno -- Bawdy Limericks : The Folklore of the Intellectual -- The Natural Superiority of Women as Eroticists / Eberhard W and Phyllis C Kronhausen -- Memoirs of a Male Chaperon / John Sack -- Black and White in Color : A Photographic Tone Poem / Ralph M Hattersle y Jr. -- Lysistrata / Aristophanes, a free adaptation by Ivan Grazni ; artwork, Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt, Heindrik Goltzius, Jost De Negker, Geller, Jerome Snyder, John Alcom, Charles B Slackman, Milton Glaser; Norman Lindsay, photos, C.
