This 1965 edition, published by Susil Gupta, is a classic scholarly reference on the early development of Buddhist art. Originally written as a "handbook" for museum visitors in Berlin, it was translated into English by Agnes C. Gibson and significantly expanded by the… renowned archaeologist James Burgess (former Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India). Grünwedel's work was one of the first to systematically categorize the "Gandhara School" and its Greco-Roman influences, contrasting them with the indigenous Indian styles of Bharhut and Sanchi. Contents Include: Early Indian Styles: Analysis of the reliefs at Bharhut, Sanchi, and Amravati, focusing on the pre-iconic phase where the Buddha was represented only by symbols (the wheel, the footprint, the Bodhi tree). The Gandhara School: A detailed examination of the Hellenistic influence on Buddhist sculpture in the northwest, including the evolution of the Buddha image and the depiction of drapery. Iconography: Definitive descriptions of the physical characteristics of the Buddha, Bodhisattvas (Maitreya, Padmapani), and minor deities (Nagas, Yakshas). James Burgess's Contributions: This edition includes Burgess's extensive notes and roughly 50 additional illustrations that were not in Grünwedel's original German text, making it a more complete resource for the English-speaking scholar. Seine Publikation stammt aus einer frühen Schaffensperiode, die wissenschaftlich anerkannt ist, im Gegensatz zu seinen Spätwerken, bei denen Fakt, wissenschaftliche Genauigkeit und geniale Fantasie sich immer mehr vermischen. Um dem Titel von Grünwedels Arbeit nun gerecht zu werden, werden von J C Aschoff zu zwei Aspekten einer weiblichen Inkarnation in Tibet einige Ausführungen. Gedacht sind sie für diejenigen Leser, die nicht so vertraut sind mit tibetischer Religion und Philosophie. Es sind dies Anmerkungen vor allem zu einigen speziellen Aspekten tibetischer Gottheiten, Göttinnen und Geistwesen und ihren sogenannten "Inkarnationen" in menschliche Gestalten. Inkarnation und Reinkarnation sind dabei als zwei zu unterscheidende Begriffe anzusehen und zudem übrigens auch vom Begriff einer Emanation noch einmal abzugrenzen. Diese hier eingehend beschriebene weibliche tibetische Göttin Vajravarahi - (tib.: Dorje Phagmo) ist eine besondere Form der der Vajrayogini, die in der Kagyü-Schule von Bedeutung ist. Sie wird meist wie Vajrayogini mit roter Hautfarbe und gleichen Attributen dargestellt. Sie trägt aber - und wohl nur sie - zusätzlich und als eindeutiges Erkennungsmerkmal auf ihrer mit Schädeln geschmückten Krone oben oder auch seitlich als ein Symbol für die Überwindung der Verblendung/Unwissen?" den Kopf einer Bache. Chakrasamvara und Vajravârâhî werden als Buddhas angesehen, die ein Yab-Yum Paar bilden.
