Hendricks, and were deprived of their choice by illegal methods, bolstered by frauds, perjuries, and forgeries. Sectional prejudices, engendered by years of violent political agitation, and intensified by civil war, the excitement of a fiercely contested presidential campaign, and vast and widely ramifying financial interests, warped the judgement of many good men and constrained them then to countenance and acquiesce in the acts of politicians bent on self-aggrandizement, intent upon the gratification of their ambition, and determined, at all hazards, to perpetuate their power.
