Von den Anfängen bis zu den Herausforderungen der Gegenwart nehmen Diskurse zur Legitimation als Bildungsbereich, zum Fach im Fächerkanon und zur Einordnung der 'sperrigen' körperlichen Bildung in unterschiedliche Verständnisse von Bildung einen großen Raum ein. Die politische Leibeserziehung der NS-Zeit und Entwicklungen im geteilten Deutschland nach 1945 hatten darauf einen besonderen Einfluss. Körper, Bewegung und Sport konstituieren die einzigartige Fachlichkeit der Körper-und Bewegungsbildung. Körperliche Leistungsfähigkeit und Bewegungskönnen sind unumgehbare Kernziele der Bildung in dieser Domäne. Die Neufassung des Begriffs Grundbildung (Literacy) und die Konzeptualisierung der Körperlichen Grundbildung als Physical Literacy verweisen auf die Zukunftsfähigkeit der körperlichen Erziehung und Bildung. Im zweiten Teil wird die Körperliche Grundbildung als ein strukturierter Prozess erläutert, der sich akzentuiert über die Schulzeit erstreckt. Es werden ein didaktisches Prozessverständnis und ein dimensioniertes Kompetenzmodell zu Grunde gelegt. Die Prozessvorstellungen verbinden die Theorie mit der Praxis und die speziellen Methodiken der Bewegungsfelder wirken als Vermittlungsglieder von der Praxis zur Theorie.
