This book is a comprehensive guide to helping young pupils learn to read by improving their ability to help themselves, making them less reliant on their teacher for support. The author believes that teaching pupils to read should start with knowledge of printed word forms. To assist the pupil in this essential step, the author employs various techniques: 1. New words are registered at the head of lessons in which they are first used. 2. New words are gradually introduced, and printed so each syllable, silent letter, and phonetic element is clearly indicated to the eye. 3. Numerous exercises provide special drills on phonetic elements and the symbols which represent them. Additionally, the author presents a wide variety of engaging material, including short stories, fables, nature studies, historical lessons, and geographical lessons, interwoven with choice bits of poetry. This variety aims to interest pupils and encourage them to read. Many lessons have a distinctly ethical value, while others provide a fund of general information on various subjects. With its emphasis on self-help, diverse content, and clear instruction, this book is a valuable resource for educators seeking to foster a love of reading in their pupils.
