We have little information about the author of this collection of poems, other than that he was a pastor at Douglas United Presbyterian Church, Douglas, Lanarkshire, (1872-1833); at Stoke Newington (188…3-1901); and Saline Free Church, Fife, (1904-1907). The poems are divided into three sections devoted to each pastorate, together with a final section entitled 'In Retirement'. The book is bound in the original light blue satin-effect cloth covered boards with a white cloth spine and gold titling on the spine and a gold emblem on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and damp spotting on the boards and spine. The spine is browned and the spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with light offsetting to the rear free endpaper and heavier offsetting to the front free endpaper. There is a signed inscription from the author on the front free endpaper that reads: " To Maggie D. Ireland? - In token of three years' faithful service - A. Crighton Alexander. 3 Orcadia - March 25th 1912". Loosely inserted at the start of the book are is aprinted poem dated poem dated 1882 and a staple-bound 'Trilogy of Song' written at Callander, 1911, both by A.C. Alexander. SIGNED and INSCRIBED By the Au.
