Spätestens nach dem babylonischen Exil haben die Juden den Namen Gottes (JHWH) aus Ehrfurcht nicht mehr ausgesprochen. Als Ersatzbezeichnung diente seither Adonaj (dt. mein Herr). Als man die Bibeltexte vokalisierte, kombinierte man die Konsonanten des JWHW-Namens mit den Vokalen der Ersatzlesung (Adonaj). So sollte sichergestellt werden, dass nicht der Name, sondern die Ersatzlesung auszusprechen ist. Diese Zusammenschreibung der Konsonanten des JWHW-Namens und den hochgestellten Vokalen von Adonaj führte bei einigen Lesern aus Unwissenheit zur Bildung des Kunstwortes 'Jehova'. Die Zeugen Jehovas legen sehr großen Wert darauf, dass der richtige Name Gottes 'Jehova' sei und dass dieser auch gebraucht wird.
