He was greatly inspired by the works of the French existentialists Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre, which is often mirrored in his narrations. Fowles is one of the most well-known authors of Postwar British Fiction and has published his famous book (a pastiche of the Victorian novel) The French Lieutenant's Woman, which has won several awards, in 1969. Due to its popularity the book has been made into a movie starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons in 1981.The novel takes place in Lyme Regis, England during the Victorian era in 1867 and is about the young gentleman Charles Smithson who, already engaged to a successful haberdasher's daughter, falls in love with Sarah Woodruff, who is disdained by the society of Lyme Regis for her alleged affair with a French lieutenant. John Fowles uses a postmodern narrator to tell a story that visibly has a very conventional Victorian framework. This narrator presents the love story of Charles and Sarah through a mixture of plot and personal comments by playing with the features of postmodern literature in order to deceive the reader and to challenge him into finding his own reality in the narration. The way the story is told shows a great interplay between the information the narrator gives to the reader and the information that is left out in order to mislead him. This technique therefore raises the question of how the reader is to understand the wholeness of John Fowles's novel when he is deceived throughout its plot. In this paper I am going to answer the question of how the reader is to understand the meaning of the book first, by giving a brief overview on Wolfgang Iser's reader-response theory and its importance in the reading experience of The French Lieutenant's Woman and second, by analyzing the different appearances of the narrator by using postmodern features like the creation of suspense, deception and illusion that Fowles used to manipulate the reader.…

The reasons might be a lack of instruction during their own studies of English or even a personal struggle with the topic because of its complexity and the fact that they are non-native speakers of English. Finding a good introductory lesson that evolves around one of the topics of pronunciation seems to be rather challenging. That might be because although a lot of the textbooks for learners of English offer some small exercises on pronunciation they do provide teachers with enough material to add-on to the units or to create a whole lesson. So even nowadays to find an English learner's classroom where pronunciation is taught in on a regular basis is a wishful thinking. Teachers have be aware of the fact that exercises on sounds, word and sentence stress, intonation and connected speech (elision and liaison) need to be part of the English lesson in order to prepare their students for the actual use of the target language in the real world without the protecting walls of the classroom. The fact that pronunciation is a part of language acquisition has long been neglected. It was seen as the finishing touch of learning English and therefore stood at the far end of the line. If students were highly motivated they went abroad or looked for a tandem partner to learn how to speak good English. But as prospective teachers me know of the importance of pronunciation and that students of the English language need to be introduced to its rules right from the beginning of the learning process. To speak an understandable and fluent English is a great part of mastering the language and therefore must not be neglected. Therefore, pronunciation is a highly important aspect of teaching English not just since it is part of the basic criteria needed to successfully communicate with native speakers of the but also to round off the skill of knowing English.…

The story is about the curious case of the gallant prince Oroonoko who got pulled into slavery and was deported to the British colony of Surinam in the 1660's. Behn's work combines different genres of texts such as the travel narrative, the romance but most importantly social criticism.Although Oroonoko is regarded as a literary work by many scholars that has advanced and supported the cause for the abolition of slavery in Britain as well as in it's colonies, it is in fact a non anti-slavery text. The author does not touch the pressing issue of slavery as such because she presents us with a rare and exceptional kind of slave. Nevertheless, the book clearly illustrates through the depiction of its hero the injustice, cruelty and arbitrariness of slavery that has been brought upon the African peoples by European Colonialism. In this paper I will show Behn's unusual presentation of a royal slave in order to criticize British Colonialism, first, by giving a brief overview on Transatlantic African slavery that is portrayed in early modern literature, second, by analyzing the depiction of slaves in Behn's narrative with a special focus on Oroonoko the royal slave, and finally by illustrating Behn's necessity for choosing a tragic hero, who could have never been protected from the depths of slavery by his royal status.…

Laut einem Teil der Bevölkerung hätten Lehrkräfte andauernd Ferien, verdienten viel Geld und am Ende ihres Berufslebens erwarte sie eine hohe Pension. Dies ist zwar eine verlockende Berufsbeschreibung, aber leider weit verfehlt: Die Aufgaben eines/einer Lehrers/Lehrerin sind weitaus vielfältiger: Vor- und Nachbereitung des Unterricht, Aufsicht während den Pausen, pädagogische und fachspezifische Konferenzen, Elterngespräche, Klassenlehreraufgaben, Schüler-AGs, Schulprojekte und Clubs organisieren und beaufsichtigen, Klassenfahrten planen und vieles mehr. Die Besonderheit des Lehrerberufs bringt es mit sich, dass eine Vielzahl der Aufgaben im häuslichen Bereich der Lehrperson erledigt werden. Dies führt häufig dazu, dass sich die schulischen Belange mit dem Privatleben der Lehrkraft vermischen. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass Lehrer in ihrer Vorbildfunktion ihre Aufgaben bestmöglich organisiert und fristgerecht erledigen sollten. Schon seit langem fühlen sich viele Lehrer/innen überfordert und kommen mit der Spannbreite an Aufgaben nicht mehr zurecht. Fördert Duras' Art zu schreiben und zu inszenieren einen mitdenkenden, eigenständigen Rezipienten oder steht er mit den wenigen Hinweisen über die Figuren und Handlung im Theaterstück Savannah Bay überfordert außen vor Aufgrund der inhaltlichen Komplexität und Verwirrung, die das Stück Savannah Bay mit sich bringt, werde ich in meiner schriftlichen Hausarbeit zuerst einmal zusätzliche Informationen über die Inszenierung geben. Zudem werde ich den groben Inhalt des Stücks kurz und präzise zusammenfassen. Um weiterhin die obige Fragestellung zu beantworten, gehe ich auf die drei durraschen Themen Liebe, Sehnsucht und Erinnerung in Savannah Bay ein, wobei ich des Weiteren den Erinnerungsprozess bei Duras erklären werde.
