La clasificación de los cuadros en dos índices distintos, según los objetos cerámicos representados en ellos, ofrece una guía útil para apreciar la dimensión del protagonismo de la cerámica como material en el arte pictórico, así como la funcionalidad de dichos objetos, su impacto histórico, su procedencia y su repercusión cultural. La trayectoria que ofrecen los capítulos del libro se basa en la agrupación por tipos de material cerámico: alfarería, loza, gres, porcelana y materiales para arquitectura, precedidos de una breve historia de la cerámica y secundados por un glosario de términos cerámicos específicos. En muchos de los cuadros del Museo Nacional del Prado, la cerámica es la protagonista indiscutible del tema representado, como ocurre en los bodegones y en las escenas populares, y, en otros, es simplemente el marco de la escena representada o el complemento realista de lo que se muestra al observador. De cualquier forma, la abundante presencia de la cerámica en las pinturas del museo demuestra fehacientemente el importantísimo papel protagonista de este ancestral material en las múltiples facetas de la actividad humana.
