Clean and attractive - Modest weathering and a touch of staining; spotting and rubbing, as well as shallow creasing to corner tips; edges are rough-cut; corner tips are abraded, with small loss; splitting to head of spine, else spine - which displays shallow creasing, is clean . BINDING - Solid. INTERIOR - Paper is unavoidably lightly toned throughout; there are a few creased corners; the aforementioned small stain follows through the first few leaves; foxing is evident on some of the first few leaves - else the interior is clean and presentable. First edition. x, 249pp. This is a collection of 51 discoveries in the fields of chemistry and physics, describing in the discoverer's own words, insofar as possible, the key event of experiment that led to the discover…y. These stories have been selected at raondom and range from the discovery of oxygen in 1774 by Joseph Priestley - throiugh the discoveries of: penicillin by Sir Alexander Fleming, nylon by Wallace Carothers, x-rays by W.C. Roentgen, the atomic theory by John Dalton, polonium and radium by Marie and Pierre Curie - to the discovery of the photosynthetic carbon dioxide cycle in 1955 by Melvin Calvin. The book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The clippped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the edgers are rubbed. The spine ends and corners and nicked. The edges have a few small tear and a larger tear of about 3/4" on the top front edge. This tear and some of the others have been repaired on the reverse with tape. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
