Alfred Borius (1837-85) was a medical doctor in the French marine, he died in Hanoi in Vietnam. He wrote several works on the hygienic and medical situation in Africa, like ?Recherches sur le climat du Sénégal? in 1875 and ?Les maladies in Sénegal? in 1882.Gustaf Fridolf Almquist (1814-86) var jurist och ämbetsman, halvbror till Carl Jonas Love Almquist. Han utnämndes 1863 till underståthållare i Stockholm men blev framförallt generaldirektör för Fångvårdsstyrelsen år 1867. Som chef för fångvården jobbade han för ett förbättrat fängelsesystem, med inrättande av nattceller och arbetslokaler samt ordnad skolundervisning vid centralfängelserna. Han utgav i samband med den stora ?penitentiarkongressen? i London 1872 boken ?A perçu sur la législation pénale et les établissements pénitentiaires en Suède? ?Det kan sägas, att Almquist på sin tid var en av de främsta ledarna bland Europas fångvårdsmän. Han låg i oavbruten korrespondens med de olika ländernas straffrättslärde och fängelsechefer, vilka gärna inhämtade hans anvisningar och råd, då det gällde reformers genomförande och nya anstalters anläggande? (Bertil Boëthius i SBL). Han var dock även verksam inom olika föreningar för stöd till ?värnlösa och fallna? och åkerbrukskolonien Hall, en förbättringsanstalt för ?vanartiga barn?, vilket blivit den nuvarande Hallanstalten.
