Nella raccolta, composta da 145 testi (superstiti di un ampio corpus di 338 discorsi), le spiegazioni del maestro si alternano a sintetici esempi di declamazione, elaborati a partire dai temi più vari: casi propedeutici all'attività forense dispute ereditarie o contenziosi di natura economica si accompagnano a situazioni romanzesche, come rapimenti messi in atto dai pirati, veleni somministrati da perfide matrigne, bambini abbandonati in fasce dai genitori. Appare così evidente la stretta relazione che le declamazioni intrattengono con il mito, la letteratura e, più in generale, l'immaginario antico. Dell'ampia raccolta quintilianea si propone qui la prima traduzione italiana, basata su un testo criticamente rivisto e accompagnata da un commento aperto alle molteplici prospettive di indagine che, da circa un ventennio, si sono sviluppate attorno alla declamazione coinvolgendo filologia e retorica, letteratura, diritto e antropologia antica.
