Soft cover. Condizione: As New. ~ First and only issue of this magazine of the first Portuguese modernism, founded by Augusto Santa-Rita, Alfredo Guisado, António Ferro and Armando Côrtes-Rodrigues, which appeared in April 1916, between ORPHEU (1915) and PORTUGAL FUTURISTA (1917). Texts from the founders and with the valuable collaboration of Fernando Pessoa, Teófilo Braga and António Sardinha. EXÍLIO was an attempt to continue ORPHEU's brief adventure, but unable to publish more than the initial number. In the important preface for this edition by Teresa Almeida "Nacionalismo e Modernismo: O Projeto Exílio" it is asserted that the magazine tries to reconcile an aesthetic decadentism with nationalist ideological tendencies, in a year marked by the frustrated dialogue between Modernism and Integralism ~ Between pp. 16 and 17 a portrait of Guerra Junqueiro, photography by Vitoriano Braga, tipped in to a tissue guarded plate ~ Publisher's wrappers ~ XVII+48p+2f ~ 25x19x1cm. ~ As New ~ LANGUAGE: Português / Portuguese Literature / Modernism / Avant-garde // We accept PayPal & EU bank transfer in EUROS //. Soft cover. Condizione: As New. ~ COMPLETE RUN of the most famous magazine of the first Portuguese Modernism. The first issue appeared in March 1915 and the second in June, and it was the last. The third, to appear in October 1917, was never published, although the uncorrected page proofs of Orpheu 3 printed in July 1917 and reproduced in this edition have been fortunately preserved. In addition to these, the last 8 pages of this third tract include: 1) a fragment of «Saudação a Walt Whitman» by Álvaro de Campos that Pessoa never got to finish although he had announced its publication in Orpheu 3, but which is missing in the typographic proofs; and 2) the poem by Camilo Pessanha «Os violoncelos» that Pessoa had expressed the intention of including in a relevant place in Orpheu 3. This is how Pessoa's initial project for Orpheu 3 has been reconstructed. This edition is enriched with reproductions of 4 cubist paintings by Santa-Rita Pintor in Orpheu 2 and another 4 works by Amadeu de Souza Cardoso in Orpheu 3. ~ Wrappers. Orpheu 1: Cover originally designed by José Pacheco. Rivista / Giornale
Condizione: Fine. ~ Foreword by Nuno Júdice for this edition ~ COMPLETE RUN BOUND IN ONE VOLUME of one of the most important Portuguese literary journals, representing a platform for launching aesthetic proposals common to the "old" and "new" modernist generations: that of «Orpheu» (1915) and that of «Presença» (1927). Directed by Almada Negreiros, Sudoeste had three issues, published in Lisbon between June and November 1935. A fourth issue has been planned but never published. The first two issues are unipersonal, presented as «Cadernos de Almada Negreiros» and written by Almada from one end to the other with just a quote borrowed from a book of Norwegian oceanographer Johan Hjort shoehorned in between. The third and final number is the most significant from a historical-literary point of view, collecting works by 16 collaborators, those of the extinct magazine «Orpheu» and those of «Presença», then still being issued. The essay texts published by Almada in the first two issues of the magazine undergo the purpose of analyzing the European cultural, social and political moment in a historical context marked by the rise and triumph of nationalist and dictatorial regimes (Mussolini, Hitler, Salazar), but in opposition to the basic principles of these regimes. This is followed by one of the best-known texts from Southwest, «Civilization and Culture», in which Almada defines civilization as "a collective phenomenon" and culture as "an individual phenomenon". Cf. Dutra Faria: «SW. Sudoeste - Europa-Portugal» in Fradique, Lisboa, nº 73, 1935 & Clara Cabrée Rocha: «Sudoeste» in MODERN!SMO. Arquivo Virtual da Geração de Orpheu ~ The 2th issue inserts 2 plates with the drawings «O Céu» and «Madrid 30» by Almada, very rare because they were suppressed by the censorship. The 3rd one bears two plates with drawings by Sarah Affonso (1899-1983) and the expressionist painter Mário Eloy (1900-1951). ~ Publisher's wrappers ~ VII+31+[3]p ; 44+[4]p : 44+[2]p+16p ~ 25x18x2cm. ~ In fine condition with just a small closed tear on toe of spine ~ LANGUAGE: Português / Portuguese Literature / Modernism / Avant-garde // We accept PayPal & EU bank transfer in EUROS.
