He was Warden of the Ophthalmic Hospital of the Order of St John in Jerusalem. Alice was an inveterate writer, and found a rich field of subject matter in her new home. Jerusalem, its people and its environs, take on characters of their own. Margaret Knowlden has edited the notes manuscript by her mother Alice Boase. She felt the experiences of her parents as ex-patriates during a very interesting period in this troubled part of the world were worth preserving in this special book.
