First. would I be able to identify the target? Second, did the Air Force really want me to drop this bomb? These thoughts only lasted several seconds. I had practiced for three years, and I could find and destroy any target within one second of my scheduled time-over-target. All I had to do was play what I called a highly sophisticated video game. As I approached the target area, my adrenaline was up and instincts took over. I found the target on my infrared display and concentrated on tracking the target by slewing the crosshairs over the aim point. I was able to take time to glance outside the cockpit. I waited for the display to tell me I was in range, and I depressed the pickle button. Several seconds later the weapons bay doors snapped open,' and I felt the 2,OOO pound bomb depart the aircraft. The bomb appeared at the bottom of the display just before it hit. At exactly 2:51 A.M. I saw the bomb go through the cross hairs and penetrate the bunker. The explosion came out of the hole the bomb had made and blew out the doors of the bunker. His chronicling is recognized as the master documenter of the history, legacy and lore of these incredible programs. Paul gained his pilot's license and flew in KC-135 tankers refueling fighter and bomber aircraft. Flying has shown him the full spectrum, supersonic in a RAF Lightning, a four ship with the British Red Arrow team, DAC with F-16s, F-4s low over the Nevada desert, and C-130 transports. Rotor wing experience includes Blackhawks, HH-53s, Wessexs, Gazelles, Wasps, Lynx and Army Chinooks. In October 1981, he was granted a special security clearance to fly in a KC-135Q tanker during the operational refueling of an SR-71 Habu from RAF Mildenhall AB in the UK. This gave him a unique access into a world usually hidden from non-program members. The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is a retired American single-seat, subsonic twin-engine stealth attack aircraft developed by Lockheed's secretive Skunk Works division and operated by the United States Air Force (USAF). It was the first operational aircraft to be designed with stealth technology. Work on what would become the F-117 was commenced in the 1970s as a means of countering increasingly sophisticated Soviet surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). During 1976, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) issued Lockheed with a contract to produce the Have Blue technology demonstrator, the test data from which validated the concept. On 1 November 1978, it was decided to proceed with the F-117 development program. A total of five prototypes would be produced; the first of which performed its maiden flight during 1981 at Groom Lake, Nevada. The first production F-117 was delivered in 1982, and its initial operating capability was achieved in October 1983. All aircraft were initially based at Tonopah Test Range Airport, Nevada. The aircraft's faceted shape (made from two-dimensional flat surfaces) heavily contributes to its relatively low radar cross-section of about 0.0108 sq ft. To minimize its infrared signature, it has a non-circular tail pipe that mixes hot exhaust with cool ambient air and lacks afterburners; it is also restricted to subsonic speeds as breaking the sound barrier would produce an obvious sonic boom that would increase both its acoustic and infrared footprints. While its performance in air combat maneuvering was less than that of most contemporary fighters, it was strictly an attack aircraft despite being comm.
