It was needed because of the increased dependence of theory on mathematical statistical models. The book recognised the need for a careful mathematical treatment of relevant mathematical models. The book is divided into 6 parts.In Part 1, The Foundations of Mental Measurement TheoryThere are two chapters, one on Measurement in Psychology and Education, the other on The Construction of True and Error Scores.Early on (p21) there is a brief discussion of theory and pragmatics of Interval Scales and their relation to Ordinal and Nominal scales as well as the use of deterministic and probabilistic models. Understanding this is important for the follow discussions, many of which have significant mathematical analysis in them.Part 2, The Classical Test Theory Model, has 5 chapters which go into detail on the assumptions and discuss issues like what The True Score is. Part 3, Other Weak True-Score Models, has 4 chapters. It revisits the definition of True Score. It discusses a some factors that could affect the scores obtained in tests and how this can be approached.Part 4, Validity and Test Construction Theory, has 5 chapters which cover many issues, such as: Validity and the Selection of Predictor Variables.Part 5, Some Latent Trait Models and Their Use in Inferring an Examinee's Ability was contributed by Allan Birnbaum, has 4 chapters, including topics such as: Some Latent Trait Models, Classification by Ability Levels and Estimation of an Ability.Part 6, Strong True-Score Theory, has 4 chapters, covering topics such as Poisson Process Models and True Scores, Factors and Latent Traits.This is part of the Addison-Wesley series on Behavioural Science: Quantitive Methods.They state: This series has been undertaken for the publication of works that combine mathematical, statistical, and computational techniques with substantive material.This wide coverage will benefit all who apply quantitative methods in the area of behavioural science.The lead authors were at Princeton University and part of the Educational Testing Service at Princeton University.Many of the ideas presented in the book were nurtured in seminars in the Mathematical Psychology of the Phsychometric Research Group of the Educational Testing Service. The writing of the book, together with some of the research reported there, was supported in part by the Logistics and Mathematical Studies Branch of the Office of Naval Research.

Wide clear tape (now somewhat yellowed) has been used to repair a split in the binding between the half title and title pages; there is a similar repair in the index. Front and back hinges are intact. Covers have heavy wear; corners and edges are worn through, spine has been taped to hold back strip in place. There is a piece of the brown faux leather surface missing from the back and spine. Not up to our usual quality standards, but offered as a less expensive option for the budget-conscious. We are unable to ship oversize books and multi-volume sets internationally.
