First and sole edition, marked "not for publication". Allen recounts his seven-hour chase pursuit of the German cruiser Nürnberg and the eventual confrontation, in which his ship sank the German vessel. We have traced no institutional copies. The Battle of the Falkland Islands was fought on 8 December 1914 between the Royal Navy… and the Imperial German Navy. Admiral von Spee sent eight ships to raid the British supply base at Stanley and was faced by an equal number of British ships, including HMS Kent under the command of John Derwent Allen (1875-1958). Allen's crew were dispatched in the battle to chase the SMS Nürnberg while it was fleeing from British battlecruisers. His account is both exciting and harrowing, as he recalls his sailors as "insatiable and mad keen to fight" (p. 8) and "thoroughly enjoying themselves" (p. 5) smashing wood to burn in the furnaces, while contrasting that with vivid descriptions of drowning German sailors who had failed to flee the sinking ship. Octavo, pp. 8. Battle plans in text. Original paper self-wrappers, wire-stitched as issued. Strong central horizontal crease, staple rusted, front wrapper lightly foxed: a very good copy.
