Vermutlich ab 1776 besuchte Hegel ein Gymnasium in Stuttgart, seit 1784 das Obergymnasium. Seine Interessen waren breit gestreut. Besonderes Augenmerk widmete er der Geschichte, insbesondere der Antike und den alten Sprachen. Ein weiteres frühes Interesse bildete die Mathematik. 1788 nahm Hegel an der Tübinger Universität das Studium der Theologie auf. Im September 1790 erhielt er den Grad eines Magisters der Philosophie, 1793 wurde ihm das theologische Lizenziat verliehen. Hegel profitierte viel von dem intellektuellen Austausch mit seinen später berühmten Zimmergenossen Hölderlin und Schelling. Sie hegten große Sympathie für die revolutionären politischen Ereignisse in Frankreich. Jedoch fand später durch das Scheitern Napoleons eine politische Umorientierung bei Hegel statt.
