Format 20x14cm . ------ 300 pages. ****************** "" Cet ouvrage est à la fois une monographie consacrée à Brignais et une formidable épopée guerrière ; la seconde prenant une ampleur d'autant plus grande qu'elle trouva son paroxysme aux portes mêmes de la localité, dont l'auteur nous retrace l'histoire, dans cette vallée riante du Garon, le 6 avril 1362. Les Brignairots de l'époque ne semblaient pas particulièrement destinés à vivre un combat d'une telle intensité entre les Tard-venus, brigands redoutables qui avaient ravagé plusieurs régions de France, et les armées royales commandées par Jacques de Bourbon. Mais les bandits reculant devant un assaut de la ville de Lyon, solidement défendue, s'étaient emparés du château de Brignais où ils avaient installé une garnison, avant d'aller dévaster le Forez et de revenir attaquer le camp français par surprise. P. Allut raconte avec talent et vivacité cette terrible défaite de la noblesse française, dont l'importance a souvent été méconnue par les historiens. Très moderne dans son approche critique et dans son efficacité stylistique, il montre avec force détails comment le comte de la Marche, par exemple, fit trop peu de cas du Petit-Meschin, le rusé chef des routiers, qui dévasta par surprise, de nuit, le camp des Français, comment Jacques de Bourbon, lui-même, mourut de ses blessures et comment beaucoup de hauts barons furent faits prisonniers. Mais avant d'aborder ce récit proprement épique, il plante le décor : il décrit la baronnie de Brignais, qui était entourée de champs de céréales, de prairies et de vignes sur les coteaux, qui possédait un château fort et qui avait été donnée par Innocent IV à l'Église et au chapitre de Saint-Just. La piété des Brignairots était bien connue, mais au fil du temps, les croyances et les coutumes évoluèrent et l'auteur constate qu'au XIXe siècle, l'indifférence et l'irrespect ont souvent remplacé la ferveur ancienne et que même les aqueducs romains, vestiges incomparables, sont laissés à l'abandon. De la même manière, note-t-il, qui connaît réellement les routiers du XIVe siècle et la puissance que représentèrent ces implacables chasseurs de butin, même face à l'Église et aux États ? Qui se rappelle que, non seulement ils sillonnèrent le royaume en tous sens, « incendiant, saccageant, pillant, égorgeant les femmes, les vieillards et les enfants », mais aussi qu'ils imposèrent fréquemment leur loi, certains d'entre eux - comme Rodrigue de Villandrando, brigand et chef de guerre sans pitié - ayant amassé une fortune immense, finissant leurs jours, respectés et priant Dieu ?
