Zwei Richtungen rangen um eine neue Magna charta seit dem beruhmten Seminardekret von Trient (1563). Gleichzeitig wird ein neuer Blick auf die Kirchenversammlung eroffnet: Die Arbeit einer Kommission an einem der pastoralen Texte - eine Arbeit damals und heute im Schatten der sogenannten 'grosen' Debatten und Beschlusse. Eine Rezeption des Konzils aber muss bei all seinen Dokumenten ansetzen.Wer sollte das Konzil umsetzen, die Erneuerung verheutigen? In der Hauptsache waren die Priester gefragt. Darum legten viele der Konzilsprotagonisten diesem kleinen Text eine grose Bedeutung bei. Das Seminardekret hat eine Dezentralisierung eingeleitet und Weichen fur eine menschlich, pastoral und geistlich ausgerichtete Ausbildung gestellt. Die weltkirchliche Rahmengesetzgebung wartete auf seine ortskirchliche Umsetzung.Welche Ziele hatte das Konzil tatsachlich im Sinn fur die Seminare? "Optatam totius" kann neu entdeckt werden als Orientierung in der andauernden Diskussion um die Priesterseminare heute. Zugleich markiert dieses Dekret den Wandel in der katholischen Theologie im 20.
