Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The poems in Cold Storage are revelations in the fullest sense, uncovering a world at once familiar and rendered new again in resplendent, transformative detail: a halo on the threshing floor, a drop of water on the skin, the nearing dark. Keith Althaus is a poet who walks by the shadow yet thrills with his illuminations, producing lanterns from yucca blossoms, a last breath, or a plain hospital gown. Here, light is what surrounds a painting or frames a closed door, saturating both the landscape and the interior of the self until even darkness glows. With spare language and a painter s eye, Althaus delivers poems that are intimate yet gorgeous, effortless yet intricate. This book marks the stunning return of one of America s pure voices in poetry and we are grateful for the light he has cast. As John Skoyles writes, his " moral center, perfect ear and ability to summon the infinite from the everyday are in full display here in poems that show the range and depth of his career. His New and Selected Poems is a major literary event.".

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Susan Barker (illustratore). 1st Edition. Three VG softcover self published and inscribed booklets of early poems from Cape Cod artists Althaus and wife Barker (she designed all covers), 1st edn. Includes Poems (1980), Night Sky (1983) and Lost at Home (1986). Poet and longtime Truro resident Althaus¿ honors include a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, a Pushcart Prize and a grant from the Massachusetts Council for the Arts. He recently completed a play ¿ not yet produced ¿ and a serious study of an Amish community (he grew up in nearby York, Pa.). There are enough poems in the hopper to fill another book. When he was in his early 20s, living in Manhattan, the possibility of studying at the Art Students League came to his attention. ¿I had no background in writing at the time,¿ he says. ¿I saw this ad in The New York Times and applied. It was a miracle I got in.¿ After his acceptance, he bought books by poets Alan Dugan and Stanley Kunitz, two of the founders of Provincetown¿s Fine Arts Work Center. Dugan and Kunitz became mentors and friends. Althaus was part of the first group of fellows at the work center in 1969. Also there as a fellow was artist Susan Baker, who would become his wife. The couple now lives in a small Cape house on Shore Road, having moved from Provincetown three decades ago during what Althaus describes as the town¿s first housing crisis. He and Baker manage the Susan Baker Memorial Museum, located in the front room of their home, filled with Baker¿s fanciful sculptures, many of them 3D wall-hangings depicting street scapes from cities around the world. It¿s a ¿gallery of humorous art,¿ a self-description that also fits the joy and wry social commentary animating the couple¿s work and life. Inscribed by Author(s).
