Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. Very Good dj. First Edition. (price-clipped) [good solid copy, slight discoloration to cloth at top of spine, age-browning and light spotting to top of text block; jacket spine a little faded, some uneven fading to front panel, browning around perimeter of rear panel, minor wear to extremities, a couple of light scuff marks on front panel]. (B&W photographs) The text of this edition is illustrated by four photographs from what I presume is the original 1948 Broadway production, starring Margaret Phillips and Tod Andrews -- although I have seen at least one of these photos (credited to Eileen Darby) identified as having been from a production at the Dipson's Erlanger Theatre in Buffalo, New York. (Nowhere in the book are these photographs attributed to a specific production, although it is noted that the play was first produced in Dallas, by Margo Jones.) The original Broadway production, by the way, was a bit of a flop, despite being TW's immediate follow-up to "A Streetcar Named Desire." The play didn't really make a splash until its 1952 revival at New York's Circle in the Square, which also was Geraldine Page's first major stage success; she reprised her role as Alma in the 1961 film version, opposite Laurence Harvey. [NOTE: This is the first issue dust jacket, with the rear jacket flap containing advertisements for three books under the heading "Other Books by Tennessee Williams" -- not, as you will occasionally see stated, "reviews" of any sort.]. Aggiungi al carrellodj. First Edition. First edition of this wonderfully illustrated collection of articles first published in INTERIORS magazine, in the original dust jacket designed by Alvin Lustig, inscribed by author Francis Schroeder: "The first copy of my first book for my first wife - Bunny." Journalist and art critic Schroeder was the editor of INTERIORS from 1941 until his death in 1952, documenting the midcentury modern revolution in industrial and interior design. The first half of this volume, "Anatomy for Interior Designers," offers ideal sizes and proportions for the furnishing of private and public spaces: "styles in furniture have nothing to do with these measurements. They will apply just as well to a Louis XV bergère as to a chromium and rawhide chair; to a quick lunch counter as to an office desk; to a Victorian love seat as to a park bench." The second half, "How to Talk to a Client," provides practical advice on the pursuit, cultivation, and management of design clients: "It is possible to have a client give final approval to finished drawing without the use of alcohol but it is apparently seldom done." The recipient of this copy, the wife of Schroeder's youth, was Charlotte Dwight Church: by 1948, the year of the book's publication, both Schroeder and Church had remarried. A terrific presentation copy, in near-fine condition, much nicer than usually found. Single volume, measuring 10 x 8.75 inches: [9], 10-69, [1]. Original orange boards lettered in black, original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket. Black-and-white illustrations throughout text. Presentation inscription from Schroeder to front pastedown, with his pictorial bookplate, designed by Leo Kober, laid in. Light shelfwear to jacket, offsetting to front endpapers. Signed.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Very Good dj. First Edition Thus. [a good sound copy, with some shelfwear to the lower edges of the paper-covered boards, and a modest bump to the upper rear corner; the jacket has suffered some very shallow paper loss at and surrounding the top of the spine, and is edgeworn along the spine-folds, with small bit of additional paper loss at the base of the spine and the lower corners; all in all still quite presentable]. (The New Classics Series) Series INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author/poet on the front endpaper: "Norman Lloyd - / - a man with some / good ideas. Here's / hoping / William Carlos Williams / 11/6/50." (It's to be noted that the inscription is written in WCW's flowing, "pre-stroke" hand, executed as it was just a year or so prior to a debilitating stroke which left him partially paralyzed and made his later signatures exceedingly shaky.) As each new installment of Williams's epic poem about the eponymous New Jersey city was published individually, New Directions would also issue a separate volume printing the entire work; the next (Book 4) would appear in 1951, and the final section in 1958. This 1950 printing -- which seems to be remarkably scarce -- appeared at a particularly auspicious time, as Williams had earlier in the year won the National Book Award for Poetry. It was the first time the prize had been presented in that category, and it occasioned some modest bewilderment in the nation's press, where commentary ran rife about the "obscurity" of both the awardee and his work. One typical comment called the poem "a paean of praise for a New Jersey town undistinguished except for the romance the poet was able to read into it. [It's] interesting, sometimes exciting -- but hardly great by almost any standard of measurement." Another wise-ass critic felt obliged to point out that Williams's "prize-winning poems, like all his others, are 'modernistic' and difficult to understand for most of the general public," adding that he "is relatively unknown outside of academic circles." The best comment of all, though, came from Williams himself, who, when chatting with a reporter at the awards dinner, offered this assessment: "I don't see that this is going to do anything for me." Williams's connection with the book's inscribee, actor-director Norman Lloyd, is unknown, although his "here's hoping" comment seems to imply that the two might have discussed some sort of possible collaboration -- perhaps scuttled by the poet's 1951 stroke? Signed by Author. Illustrated by (dj design) Alvin Lustig (illustratore).…
