A substantial and visually accomplished retrospective devoted to Paul Emsley (b. 1947), the Glasgow-born artist who grew up and established his early career in South Africa before relocating to England. Curated by Amanda Botha, the exhibition surveyed more than three decades of Emsley's drawings and paintings, from his earlier expressionist work through the meticulously observed black-chalk and pencil drawings for which he became internationally known. Essays include Botha's "Beauty and Truth: An Aesthetic Appreciation of Paul Emsley's Art" and Clare Menck's "Portrait of Paul Emsley," accompanied by reproductions of portraits, flowers, landscapes, animals and other works. The catalogue notably reproduces Emsley's 2010 portrait of Nelson Mandela, now in the Nelson Mandela Foundation collection. Emsley had won the National Portrait Gallery's 2007 BP Portrait Award and had also painted V. S. Naipaul for the Gallery. The timing of this catalogue makes it especially interesting. The Stellenbosch retrospective opened in March 2012; during that same year Emsley produced the National Portrait Gallery's commissioned portrait of Catherine, then Duchess of Cambridge, unveiled in January 2013. The National Portrait Gallery records both that painting and Emsley's preliminary drawings in its collection. Thus this retrospective captures Emsley's career at the precise point immediately before that royal commission brought him extraordinary international attention. His institutional standing is considerable: the Redfern Gallery records work in the British Museum, National Portrait Gallery, South African National Gallery, Johannesburg Art Gallery and numerous university and corporate collections.
