Die Far-North-Region in Kamerun wird durch extremen Wassermangel und Klimavariabilität beeinflusst. Daraus ergeben sich groÃe Ernteverluste durch Dürre, starke Regenfälle, Ãbersch…wemmungen und Schrumpfen des Tschadsees. Viele Studien haben diese Katastrophen auf zwei mà gliche Ursachen zurückgeführt: Den menschlich induzierten Klimawandel und die menschlichen Aktivitäten (wie schlechte landwirtschaftliche Praktiken, nicht nachhaltige Nutzung von Wasser, erhà hte Nachfrage aufgrund des Bevà lkerungswachstums, schlechte Wasserwirtschaft, Entwaldung usw.). Die Analyse von Klimadaten (Temperatur- und Niederschlagsdaten zwischen 1957 und 2006) und die fehlende Fachberatung in der Region deuten jedoch darauf hin, dass der zunehmende Wassermangel durch eine schlechte Wasserwirtschaft und nicht direkt durch den Klimawandel bedingt sein kà nnte. Wasser ist von entscheidender Bedeutung für diese semi-ariden Regionen, aber der Verwaltung dieser Ressource ist keine angemessene Aufmerksamkeit gegeben worden. Die Landnutzungsintensivierung um Einzugsgebiete, Grundwasserextraktion, der Bau von Dämmen entlang der Flussläufe, das schnelle Bevà lkerungswachstum, die ungeplante Urbanisierung und die sozioà konomische Entwicklung führten zu einer schlechten und nicht nachhaltigen Bewirtschaftung der Wasserressourcen. Das Wasserressourcenmanagement ist stark fragmentiert in Sektoren und Gemeinden. Dies führt manchmal zu einer Verschwendung und Ineffizienz. Weiterhin war der Mangel an qualitativ hochwertigen und beobachtungsbedingten hydrogeologischen Daten eine groÃe Einschränkung für die Entwicklung des Wassersektors in der Region. Um die Wasserprobleme in der Region zu bewältigen, bedarf es daher eines ganzheitlichen Ansatzes und das Konzept des integrierten Wasserressourcenmanagements (IWRM). Dieses steht für eine bessere Chance, ausreichend Là sungen zu bieten. In dieser Studie wird IWRM als Management-Verfahren verstanden, um die natürlichen Ressourcen und die Gesellschaft zusammen zu führen. Ziel dieser Studie ist die Verfügbarkeit von Wasser für den lokalen Verbrauch durch die Umsetzung des IWRM zu erhà hen. Der Ansatz soll für die Erzielung eines guten Ergebnisses nicht zu anspruchsvoll sein, da die politischen, sozialen und kapazitätsbedingten Probleme, die eine effektive Projektumsetzung behindern kà nnen, nicht ignoriert werden sollen. Trotz der groÃen Herausforderung für die Bewirtschaftung der Wasserressourcen in der Far-North-Region, wurden in dieser Studie nützliche Bestände des Systems aufgenommen und Verbesserungsmà glichkeiten untersucht. Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der Forschung kà nnen in den folgenden Kategorien zusammengefasst werden: 1) Ein DPSIR-konzeptioneller Rahmen wurde entwickelt und als Grundlage für die Umsetzung von IWRM empfohlen, allerdings nur dann, wenn kein IWRM-Plan für diese Region vorhanden ist. 2) Die UN-Wasser-Umfrage wurde genutzt, um den Fortschritten bei der Umsetzung von Elementen des integrierten Wasserressourcenmanagements in der Region Rechnung zu tragen. Das Ergebnis legt nahe, dass sehr langsame Fortschritte bei der Umsetzung von Elementen der IWRM in der Region gemacht wurden. Zusätzlich wurden Bereiche mit Besorgnis identifiziert. Durch die Verwendung von Hausfragebà gen antworteten etwa 52% der Haushalte, dass sie mit ihrer täglichen Wasserversorgung zufrieden sind. Die Regenwassernutzung wurde als beste Alternative für die Wasserversorgung in der Region empfohlen. 3) Das GROWA Modell wurde verwendet, um den Wasserhaushalt in der Region zu berechnen. Obwohl einige der Eingangsparameter aus kleineren, verallgemeinerten internationalen Karten abgeleitet wurden, wurde auf die erhaltenen räumlich verteilten Werte der Wasserhaushaltskomponenten nicht verzichtet. Das Gesamtergebnis zeigt, dass groÃe Teile der Far-North-Region von Kamerun eine sehr niedrige Grun.
