The notion of 'The child is father of the man' appears to be ingrained in earlier works such as the volume 'Lyrical Ballads' (1798) as well. The poems discussed in this paper are 'We are Seven' and 'Anecdote for Fathers'. Is the child a teacher or the origin of the adult Or is it something inferior How does the portrayal of the children in the two poems differ and in what ways are they similar The interpretation and comparison of these poems will provide an insight into Wordsworth's Romantic child.In these two ballads adult narrators describe their encounters and conversations with a child. The focus here is clearly on the descriptive aspect (e.g. the child's appearance and behaviour). To get an historical background of the prevalent ideas of childhood and children of Wordsworth's contemporaries, a short summary of the two dominant philosophers Jean-Jacques Rousseau and John Locke, who both coined the Romantic views on childhood, is provided (Chapter 2). The analysis of the poems themselves is divided into several subcategories: the portrayal of the child (3.1.), the child in relation to the adult (3.2.), the child's use of language (3.3.) and the child's worldview (3.4.). The categories have been chosen in consideration of the research questions whether Wordsworth's children are portrayed positively.

Dem unbedarften Leser stellen sich unweigerlich verschiedene Fragen, scheint doch die Gattung des Märchens der Inbegriff des glücklichen Ausgangs zu sein. Was unterscheidet also das Volksmärchen vom Kunstmärchen Was macht die Gattungen in der literaturwissenschaftlichen Definition aus und wie grenzen sie sich ab Wie hängt das Kunstmärchen mit dem Volksmärchen zusammen Diese Arbeit wendet Aspekte und Charakteristika des Volksmärchens auf Tiecks Runenberg an und untersucht somit, inwieweit Entsprechungen und Unterschiede festzustellen sind. Die Kriterien hierfür sind dem Werk Max Lüthis übernommen und werden auf zwei Szenen des Runenbergs angewandt, die das Kunstmärchen in besonderer Weise charakterisieren, Christians Erlebnis auf dem Runenberg und das (hier sogenannte) verpasste Happy End.Die Liebe der Romantiker zum Märchen geht aus seinem selbstverständlichen Umgang mit dem Wunderbaren hervor. Romantische Dichter hoben diesen Aspekt, der in der Literatur der Aufklärung selten geworden war, erneut hervor. Das wahre Wesen der Dinge sei nur oder zumindest besser durch die Romantisierung erkennbar. Dass das Volksmärchen in den Fokus der Romantiker geriet, hängt auch mit seiner mündlichen Überlieferungstradition zusammen. Viele romantische Dichter empfanden und verklärten das Mittelalter als ein goldenes Zeitalter, eine harmonische Vergangenheit, in der sich der Mensch noch im Einklang mit der Welt befand und nach der es in der Gegenwart zu streben gilt. Das Alter und die allgemeine Gültigkeit des Märchens, so wie sein fantastischer Inhalt fanden Anklang und Nachahmer unter den Romantikern, sodass Volksmärchen gesammelt und niedergeschrieben und erste Kunstmärchen verfasst wurden. Der Runenberg ähnelt in seiner Abweichung vom prototypischen Volksmärchen dem 'Blonden Eckbert' von Tieck. Wahnsinn und Schein spielen eine große Rolle in Tiecks Märchenkonzeption. Das Wunderbare wird in eine düstere Sphäre gedrängt und scheint mehr und mehr zum Unheimlichen zu werden. Die ungewöhnlichen Merkmale des Textes, ob sie nun volksmärchentypisch sind oder nicht, bedürfen einer näheren Betrachtung, um den Märchencharakter des Textes ganz zu erschließen.

Based on an exemplary analysis of five works of classical and contemporary children's literature, tendencies and conventions in the portrayal of villains and the embodiment of evil are explored. This study includes a definition of children's literature, discusses villainy as a literary and narrative category and draws on concepts like e.g. ageism, childism and C.G. Jung's shadow.
