Während ihrer Haft putschte das Militär, welches am Ende über 30 000 Menschen ermorden ließ. Glady Ambort erlebte in dieser Zeit verschiedene Formen der Isolationshaft. Nach drei Jahren, am 8 Januar 1978, kam sie auf Vermittlung des Internationalen Roten Kreuz frei und konnte nach Frankreich ausreisen. Auf einer Pressekonferenz in Paris zusammen mit Simone de Beauvoir gab sie den ersten Bericht über die Haft, über das Verhältnis der Gefangenen untereinander und über das Erleben einer jungen Frau, deren Jugend mit dem Tag ihrer Inhaftierung beendet worden war.Ihr Buch, mehr als 30 Jahre später, ist ein detaillierter Bericht über die verschiedenen Stufen der Hölle, deren Ziel es ist, das Eigene des rebellierenden Individuums zu brechen und zu vernichten, damit eine ausbeuterische Gesellschaftsordnung ihre Herrschaft fortsetzen kann.
