Illustrated with photographs by Chester Higgins, Jr - the poems include some from slavery, others from Africa and selections from many poets, ranging from Dunbar and Hughes to Ted Joans, Audre Lorde, Mari Evans, Bob Kaufman and Jean Toomer. Also included is a selection of student poems, and among these young poets is Vanessa Howard. Near fine in illustrated red and green wrappers - some slight wear to the covers, and the inevitable toning of the pages.

This edition includes a 16-page section by Cam Smith bound in between pages 80 & 81, with suggestions & questions for classroom use. Paperback, as pictured, with 'Teacher Edition' label; reportedly, no hardcover was issued. Stated first printing (first edition). Light rubbing, minor chipping; pages tanned, binding glue brittle. Text clean; 160 + 16 pages; b/w photos by Higgins. Size: 5¼" by 7½".
