Authorized by the General Synod of the Reformed Church in the United States, the volume was created to cultivate reverence, theological grounding, and musical quality among young people and congregational assemblies at the dawn of the twentieth century. Opening pages carry structured liturgical services, general prayers, and responsive Scripture selections. Following the liturgical framework, the text block holds the numbered hymns with musical notation, choral chants, and thematic and tune indices. Editorial direction of the musical scores was conducted in Philadelphia by blind composer Adam Geibel alongside musicologist W. J. Baltzell, working under the compilation committee led by Rev. Ambrose M. Schmidt.
