Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 5th or later Edition. Sixth edition of this infamous book. Author impregnated a member of the flock, attempted to abort her and went to prison. (He makes no mention of the abortion charge since he denies having anything to do with the young woman.) In the first edition the author recounts in detail his version of the facts, the trial and his time in prison. In this later edition he cuts down on that and makes various new arguments as to why he is innocent. While reading this it is pretty easy to see that he is an unreliable narrator and why the judge did not believe him. The scandal led to the first state law against abortion in the US. There is an excellent description of the criminal law process in the early 19th century. Condition of the book is Good: complete with all pages including blanks. No interior writing, tears, folds. Slight to moderate foxing throughout. Hinges are starting but remain well attached, just don't use this to hang a door. Please see images of the book you will receive.…

Pages are clean and intact overall but have trimming on fore-edge of several pages (has resulted in some loss of text amounting to about several brief words per page) and moderate foxing or staining throughout (stains do not affect the text's readability). Covers are clean and intact overall but have rubbing on boards (much of leaf pattern on paper rubbed off), moderate wear to extremities, and slight splitting and loosening along inner hinges. Binding is still strong and holding. A Good copy. In this publication, Reverend Ammi Rogers (1769-?), an Episcopal clergyman, defends himself against defamatory accusations made against him. Rogers begins his account by chronicling his life. He describes, among many times and events, his early childhood, conversion from the Presbyterianism Church to the Episcopal Church, pursuit of ministerial work, ordination as an Episcopal minister, marriage, the passing of his wife (she was only 26) from a "sickness" that swept through Saratoga, and beginning of religious and political conflicts between him and Bishop A. Jarvis. Part of the dispute between Jarvis and Rogers was that Rogers was banned by Jarvis from preaching in Connecticut churches. Rogers seems to say that the geopolitical lines between New York and Connecticut factored into the conflict surrounding Rogers' role as a minister in Connecticut. However, the accusations that Rogers appears to combat most ardently against are those maligning his character, his status as a Christian, and an infamous court trial through which he was found guilty by jury. Rogers argues that he was wrongfully imprisoned for two years. It appears that Rogers was charged with raping a young unmarried woman from Griswold and then performing an abortion on her through the use of drugs and an "unusual instrument." Rogers denies any wrongdoing. He also proceeds to discuss the separation of church and state and Christian subjects.…
