Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. 48, [4] pages. Pagination includes covers. Illustrations. Approximately 8.75 and 11.25 inches. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Introduction by Roland Lazenby. Chapter entitled Simply Splendid by Jim Prime. Chapter entitled A Softer Side was based on interview…s conducted by Bill Nowlin. Chapters entitled Proud Heritage, An American Hero and The Ultimate All-Star by Bill Nowlin Theodore Samuel Williams (August 30, 1918 - July 5, 2002) was an American professional baseball player and manager. He played his entire 19-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career as a left fielder for the Boston Red Sox from 1939 to 1960, only interrupted by service time during World War II and the Korean War. Nicknamed "The Kid", "The Splendid Splinter", "Teddy Ballgame", "The Thumper", and "The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived", Williams is regarded as one of the greatest players in baseball history. Williams was also an outstanding fielder, especially in the difficult left field of Fenway Park in Boston. Williams was a nineteen-time All-Star, a two-time recipient of the American League (AL) Most Valuable Player Award, a six-time AL batting champion, and a two-time Triple Crown winner. He finished his playing career with a .344 batting average, 521 home runs, and a 0.482 on-base percentage, the highest of all time. His batting average is the highest of any MLB player with 302 or more home runs. Born and raised in San Diego, Williams played baseball throughout his youth. Joining the Red Sox in 1939, he immediately emerged as one of the sport's best hitters. In 1941, Williams posted a .406 batting average, making him the last MLB player to bat over .400 in a season. He followed this up by winning his first Triple Crown in 1942. Williams interrupted his baseball career in 1943 to serve three years in the US Navy and US Marine Corps during World War II. Upon returning to MLB in 1946, Williams won his first AL MVP Award and played in his only World Series. In 1947, he won his second Triple Crown. Williams was returned to active military duty for portions of the 1952 and 1953 seasons to serve as a Marine combat aviator in the Korean War. In 1957 and 1958 at the ages of 39 and 40, respectively, he was the AL batting champion for the fifth and sixth time. Williams retired from playing in 1960. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966, in his first year of eligibility.[2] Williams managed the Washington Senators/Texas Rangers franchise from 1969 to 1972. An avid sport fisherman, he hosted a television program about fishing, and was inducted into the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame.[3] Williams' involvement in the Jimmy Fund helped raise millions in dollars for cancer care and research. In 1991 President George H. W. Bush presented Williams with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award bestowed by the United States government. He was selected for the Major League Baseball All-Time Team in 1997 and the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1999. Commemorative Collector's Edition [stated]. Presumed first printing thus. Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. viii, [2], 365, [1] pages. Illustrations. Introduction. Chapters on individual players, Branch Rickey, Jack Buck, Harry Caray, August A. Busch Jr., Timeline. A Three-way Tie for the Pennant, the 1964 World Series, Epilogue, Notes and References and a… final section on the contributors. The biographies were contributed by the Society for American Baseball Research. This is part of The Memorable Teams series. Among the players and others profiled are: Ken Boyer, Lou Brock, Mike Cuellar, Curt Flood, Bob Gibson, Tim McCarver, Joe Morgan, Ray Sadecki, Mike Shannon, Bobby Shantz, Curt Simmons, Bob Uecker, Red Schoendienst, Branch Rickey, Stan Musial, Jack Buck, Harry Caray, and August A. Busch, Jr. By 1964 the storied St. Louis Cardinals had gone seventeen years without so much as a pennant. Things began to turn around in 1953, when August A. Busch Jr. bought the team and famously asked where all the black players were. Under the leadership of men like Bing Devine and Johnny Keane, the Cardinals began signing talented players regardless of color, and slowly their star started to rise again. Drama and Pride in the Gateway City commemorates the team that Bing Devine built, the 1964 team that prevailed in one of the tightest three-way pennant races of all time and then went on to win the World Series, beating the New York Yankees in the full seven games. All the men come alive in these pages, pitchers Ray Sadecki and Bob Gibson, players Lou Brock, Curt Flood, and Bobby Shantz, manager Johnny Keane, his coaches, the Cardinals' broadcasters, and Bill White, who would one day run the entire National League, along with the dramatic events that made the 1964 Cardinals such a memorable club in a memorable year.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xi, [1], 244 pages. Audio CD in pocket on fep. Black and White illustrations. Format is approximately 8.25 inches by 9.5 inches. Foreword by Curt Schilling. This book could not have happened without the enthusiasm and support of the National World War II M…useum. Includes essays, sections, and ballplayer profiles by Gordon "Nick" Mueller, Gary Bedingfield, Frank Ceresi, William Mead, as well as the editor. A perspectives section included articles by Bill Swank, Kerry Yo Nakagawa, Merrie FIdler, and Terry Allvord. It also includes a list of Major Leaguers who served in WWII and a list of Major and Minor Leaguers killed during WWII. Among the interesting essays is on on the Chemical Warfare Service. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, plunging the United States into World War II. The next day, Bob Feller, star pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, enlisted in the U.S. Navy--becoming the first major-league ballplayer to join the military during the war--and volunteered immediately for combat service. The dramatic confluence of patriotism and the national pastime changed not only the lives of many enlistees, but of America itself. When Baseball Went to War is the stirring account of how Feller and other major leaguers answered their nation's call, leaving their homes and loved ones for duty, honor, and country. The lucky ones sacrificed only a few years of their playing careers; others sacrificed their lives. Men like Yogi Berra, Dom DiMaggio, Monte Irvin, Jerry Coleman, Moe Berg, Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, and Warren Spahn, called heroes at the ballpark by their adoring fans, discovered true heroism in the lives of their fellow servicemen and women who never made it home.
