Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Economics has the capacity to offer us deep insights into some of the most formidable problems of life, and offer solutions to them too. Combining a global approach with examples from everyday life, Partha Dasgupta describes the lives of two children who live very different lives in different parts of the world: in the Mid-West USA and in Ethiopia. He compares the obstacles facing them, and the processes that shape their lives, their families, and their futures. He shows how economics uncovers these processes, finds explanations for them, and how it forms policies and solutions. Along the way, Dasgupta provides an intelligent and accessible introduction to key economic factors and concepts such as individual choices, national policies, efficiency, equity, development, sustainability, dynamic equilibrium, property rights, markets, and public goods. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Hardcover. Condizione: As New. The trauma of the partition in Eastern India is discussed explicitly in a way that has not happened before. Drawing upon interviews with women who were uprooted from old East Bengal in 1947, on diaries, memoirs and creative literature, the editors lift the 'veil of silence' that has surrounded partition. The lack of overt public discourse has meant that people outside Bengal have tended to believe that the impact was very much less on the people in the eastern region. In truth, the sufferings, the loss of life and livelihoods and of shelter were very real but of a different nature from the fast-moving horror of the Punjab. It was more like an oozing wound that seemed not to heal than a one-time severance of a limb. Seminar, Feb 2002, devoted itself to an in-depth discussion of the eastern partition, inviting Bagchi and Dasgupta to edit the issue. Many contributions have been taken from this pioneering work and many more have been added to focus on what women experienced, felt, and witnessed. Weaving together the voices of many women and incisive analysis, the book provides an invaluable discussion on displacement, rape, loss and why women pay the price. It thus traces the strenuous triumph attained in the crucible of suffering.…

Yet in India, this is new and un chartered territory waiting to be explored. Similar to the country he inhabits the Indian male is rapidly changing. India is often described as a land of contrasts, and nobody embodies so many contradictions as the men found here. Like the demon king Ravana, masculinity wears at least ten heads. Only by revealing the many facets of what it is to be an Indian man can the subject be fully understood. Through Bollywood, literature, the media and theatre, the essays in this book examine how popular culture impacts masculinities in their numerous forms. Based upon experience of lecturing in popular culture and publishing on society, cinema and gender this analysis of Indian masculinities seeks to answer a question that has grown out of current cultural conversation: What is the Indian male.…

Until a few decades back, Bangla Dalit literature was written primarily by men who were constantly negated by the mainstream publishers. Compelled to publish their own works in forms of literary journals, little magazines, and collected anthologies; which also offered space for fellow Dalit women writers to bring out their tales. Literary Magazines run by women played a key role in encouraging more writers. Kalyani Thakur Charal and Sayatan Dasgupta have brought together the focus on gender-caste and gender-class relationships with the language of Dalit Bengali women which has been overlooked and deliberately omitted for far too long.…
